The P6 prelim papers are usually so much tougher than any other exam papers so to use the scores as a fall-back for the psle is not very reasonable.
The mechanism of computing a T Score for a missed PSLE paper
is as described by What The.

MOE would not use the prelim score for computation since
the difficulty level of prelim papers differs from school to school.
      What The:
Just for clarifications, even if the student fall sick during PSLE, it is not his Prelims results which are used as the PSLE T score, else it will open a floodgate of students who are \"sick\" if they really did well for Prelims. There is a detailed computation to the T score of this students, in brief, the MOE will look at the better 2-3 students before this students and worse 2-3 students for the Prelims. Then MOE will use these students PSLE scores and compute an average (plus some adjustments) for this students. Hope it clarifies.

And a student has to be very sick indeed before mechanisms involving the prelim scores are invoked. In the case of the mass food poisoning which I mentioned in an earlier post, several of the students I believe were required to proceed with the PSLE despite being hospitalised; special examination arrangements were made in the hospital. Only one or two students were excused.

The wonders of Singapore's education system will never cease.

Trying very very hard not to get sucked in by all the madness but sad to admit that I have succumbed a number of times. :imdrowning:

Thank you so much for all your replies.

For a typical student, does it mean one can only appeal if one meets cutoff? But if 1, 2 or 3 points away from cutoff, appeals are not entertained?
Tryg to clarify. Cuz in 2013 there are many successful appeals for psle scores 1 to 3 pts below cutoffs. Then last year, a number of pri sch mates were told by sec schools that they can only appeal if they are at cutoff.
Actually I am not too sure if it is fair for sec schs to consider appeals based on sch results, some of the pri schs set really tough papers and some are pretty easy. My dd's sch pps are manageable. There are several full marks for Maths and Sciences, a lot of 90-plus.
Previously, appeals after S1 posting were allowed without reference to COP of the school. I think it was recent 1-2 years that MOE announced that appeals to school will only be accepted provided student meets the COP of the school.

As for what factors the schools will take into consideration for the appeals other than the COP, I supposed it is up to the school. If the student happened to have a brilliant CCA record in a niche that the school treasure, it will probably stand in his / her advantage. I should think the school will ask for a handful of documents including P5 and P6 school results to be sure the kid can fit into their programme and have a gauge of the kid's standard.

Yep very hard not to get influenced by the madness. Sometimes I get paranoid too. But as long as we can come to our senses soon, it is ok .

DD1 was down with fever and cough 3 days before PSLE oral exams. Lucky she did not lose her voice and recovered in time to go for her exams. It makes me really feel for the kids who are going through this.

To all the children out there preparing for PSLE, take care and have faith. Its a stressful period to be facing this at your age, and no matter what happens, remember that your parents are behind you and love you the same whatever outcome it may be.

Thanks Sun_2010. Have been feeling very down lately. Like Imeemee, my DS was also sick . But his started during oral. He could still do but was very, very down and not his usual self. This week is his prelims and thank goodness he is getting better. But better is not best. Sincerely hope he is ok for the PSLE written papers.

I feel very discouraged and overwhelmed by this system that puts such young children through so much stress...even when they are sick. Even adults can't function when they are unwell. Exhorting Singaporeans to be a more compassionate and humane society is simply not going to work if we show such blatant disregard for children's health and wellbeing.

I tell my DD1 that at this stage of preparing for PSLE, our objective is to deal with the system and get the necessary marks in order to lead us somewhere else. I also tell her honestly that in my opinion, there is no real educational value for her at this stage, but that is something we have to bear with while being cognisant about. Now that she is better at understanding this rationale, she seems less argumentative and resistant to why we have to do what we are doing.

I think as long as we are clear of our first principles, we do not necessarily have to be consumed by the system while we work within it.

                  My two cents worth.

DD had her math prelim paper yesterday and she said Paper 2 was very tough. Tougher than all the other practice prelim papers she did. My heart sank upon hearing this though I was expecting this. :nailbite: DD's teacher warned the class that the coming Science Paper is going to be a difficult one also. Sigh!

I told dd to pray and just to do her best. Poor kids. 🤷
Ya also received info from ds's science teacher that tomorrow's science paper is going to be more difficult than past years šŸ˜“

                      Good post!
I felt sad when dd told me some of her classmates hv started getting headaches and insomnia. There was a boy who came to school with marks bearing tcm cupping on his forehead. He is very good in his studies and he has been experiencing severe headaches and giddiness recently. And there are so many telling her how worried they are of the psle.

IMmeemee thank you for your reply.... apologies,I think you did not quite get the point I was trying to make. My point is that I don't think we should be dealing with such a system in the first place.
For example, I should not in the first place have to tell my child there is \"no educational value\" at any stage in their school lives.

First principles are different for different people. And I can definitely tell you we are pretty clear about ours. It's just the rat race and the relative paucity of values therein that I do not like.
