if group tuition has not benefitted him, then it may be time to consider going 1-to-1 for the weak subject(s).

Your DS taking PSLE in 2017, right? I think he should be in good hands with your years of experience as a tutor

Yes, agree with Janet. To do well in the languages, best to start revision early. Find a 1-1 tutor, instead of attending big group tuition, to be more effective

                  Fatmama,
Don't worry as Chinese is also the weakest subject for most of the children. Don't give up and I notice with hard work, it is possible to achieve an A during PSLE for many because ultimately, the t-score is about fitting the Bell curve and going by history, the band is quite wide for Chinese.

Many children brought up in a purely English-speaking environment whom I know scored A.

very strange...son scored A for his psle. his tutor was also very confident he would get an A for CL.
he worked hard for his 作文...memorizing 开头,结尾, 好词好句.

Hi, my elder DD just completed her PSLE and I am starting to browse this thread in preparation for my younger DD's PSLE next year.

Languages weren't my elder DD's forte, but we managed to find some methods that work within a span of <1 year.

For English, I suggest you find a tuition teacher / centre that will assess your child to find out his weaknesses, i.e. based on the current PSLE format paper, help check which are the sections your child does well, and not so well. For my DD, we found that she fares reasonably well in Grammar but was losing a lot of marks on Synthesis questions. So we made her focus a lot on remembering the rules of Synthesis and practising them. For certain sections such as Grammar and Situational Writing, perfect score is attainable by remembering the rules and practising on how to apply them.

For Chinese, I couldn't personally help my daughter as I'm simply not good enough to teach this - but it seems my DD's tuition teacher made her memorise many good phrases to use for 作文 or Oral in different scenarios... though her answers tended to sound like \"model templates\" due to this method of learning, it did help my DD to maintain a reasonably good score, usually >85. (Though I must say, I don't think this method will really work for Higher Chinese where more creativity is like required..)

Again, I may be saying these too early as I have yet to see my DD's PSLE scores... but just my two cents' worth based on my experience thus far.
