Hmm... I will go for minimal sets of school uniforms/ PE attire as DS has not \"grown/shoot\" yet. Hopefully he will shoot up during this Nov/ Dec holidays so as not to waste my money... haha.


Check with experienced parents again... are all books on the booklist to be purchased? Do the booklist split into \"must buy or Optional\"? I am very concerned not to buy books which are optional but not stated. So the school end up not using it and my DS, of course, will not look at them.

Sec sch is almost whole day with more physical activities, i buy exactly 5 sets - dun want to make myself busy with washing, hanging m ironing etc
my child was size 24/25 last dec - so i bought mixture of size 26 and size 27 for grow allowance
when he has PE, he will wear size 27 ( PE attire inside - he v lazy to go n chg )
booklist depends on how gd the sch bk shop and sch admin office design it
my kids booklist has the compulsory n optional items
u need to bring a pen or highlighter to glance thru the list n decide what to buy eg I dun think a sec 1 need flexible curve yet, so i omit, calculator i omit too coz i got new ones for psle , other reference guide books , can omit first n buy later - all textbooks n wk books must buy + exercise books

Both dh n I sat thru the P talk , we only split army to buy books and uniform after P speech - but i advise to bring enuff water and some sandwiches or handy food - coz no foos ! vending machine and sandwich vending .mostly sold out. we spent abt 2hrs to 3 hrs for the whole event . Books and uniforms all bought on same day.
Try not to bring young pre schooler or lower pri siblings - unless they can sit thru and are co-operative- large crowd, hot ,noisy 1/2 day in the new sch

I try not to buy anything on briefing day. Bookshop long queue. Uniforms long queue. I rather make another trip to buy on another day than battle the long queue

yes , if got time to spare , do on separate days is more R&R
Dh and I need to take leave for sec 1 admin day so we dun want to waste it , else working parents need to take extra day off again. u can order on line n collect later too ( but do note, sec 1 admin day is v near xmas, new year holidays - basically u only have abt 5 working days of reaction time n sch open le) i think sch open 1/2 day on xmas and new year eve - so its quite tight for all purchases n logistic ,not to mention those who want to appeallllll ..

For my daughter's school, we reported to the hall in the morning and found out which class she
was assigned to. She then sat with her class in a line, while the parents were seated at the back
of the hall. The Principal gave a speech. IIRC, there were also brief intro to the curriculum. After that,
the girls took turn going to the desk in front of the queue to complete the registration. They were given an
orientation pack with book list, various forms, first week schedule, etc.

After registration was buying of uniforms and books. If both parents are going to the registration, one could
actually skip the speeches and go buy the books before the crowd. For uniforms, it's best to wait for the
child to try on for size.

Didn't know you have an older DD. Always thought yours are P6 and below.

Maybe MOE should try to release of the Secondary School posting earlier, than gives that cramped few days for the parents to get ready… haha…

Hubby and I split to settle his stuff. We buy one size bigger for uniform. Every year had to buy uniforms as he is on the growth spurt. I hate queues but there are only a few days for Sec 1s to get their stuff since they are the last level before Christmas and New Year's Day.
Even for their books, we buy from popular to enjoy the 5% discount and take advantage of cash rebates at book fest.

Sorry to ride on this thread, my younger gal will be taking her PSLE next year and she desperately need help in her Sciemce as she is scoring only 60 plus. I am trying to find a science tutor to work with her on her weaknesses. Does anyone have any to good and experienced tutor to recommend please? Thanks.

On another note, I have an elder gal in Sec 1 this year and would like to share my experience. With regard to the purchase of books n uniforms, you may want to try calling the school bookshop once the posting resuts are out to find out if they are open prior orientation and if you van get the sec 1 books. As for uniforms, can try the school website to check the supplier and then go to their shop to purchase. On orientation day itself, it can be stressful to try on uniforms and the supplier may even run out of size. Hope this helps.

it's really crazy to attend orientation and buy books/uniforms on one day especially since it's close to year end.
if only the posting results can be brought forward to mid-dec...because sec 1 is the last level to get books & uniforms. if posting can be done earlier, we parents can settle everything earlier.

I agree - it's total madness. The whole process is so drawn out. They finish their exams at the beginning of October but the results don't come out until the end of November - and they won't even confirm the date for that - then we have to wait another month for the posting. No thought for the parents or families at all.

And it also restricts the time you can go away and take a well-earned break We normally go away from mid-December to just after Christmas but we can't this year.
