\"A friend's child was there. They used to produce value-added academic results every year and very good CCA results despite having no cut-off points. But heard that the academic standard has dropped despite having much better cut-off points. My friend's child did his GCE last year, and according to him, the teachers felt that it's the best batch (in terms of cut-off) but the worst GCE results.\"

Can someone assure me of Mr Low's leadership please?

Manjusri Secondary School has students coming from both affiliated and non-affiliated schools. I really doubt the 2nd sentence (which means the entire statement is not worth reading) because the COP of the school dropped since 2013 (205 to 196). There are many other factors (location, environment etc) that cause the plunge in COP, and not necessary the principal.

Can someone assure me of the credibility of the source please?

It's rude to copy my sentence, mindays. Behave yourself. I am upset enough that the current principal of nyjc is leaving. Don't brush off facts and try to deceive us that everything will be alright and nothing will change.

COPs of manjusri from 2012 to 2016 were 200, 205, 201, 206 and 196, respectively. Inconsistent and not outstanding.

I was merely using the tone you used from that post. So you actually found it disturbing (because you felt that the impact was strong?)? In what way did I brush off facts? I provided alternatives and different perspectives. You seem to have a very negative perception on \"principal changed means doom\", quoted from \"try to deceive us that everything will be alright and nothing will change\".Of course, everybody hopes for a better change.

If you have learnt trend analysis, I am pretty sure the COP has a decreasing trend. Furthermore, you shouldn't use COP as a gauge of the students' abilities. (I can understand if you want to use the MEDIAN entry points instead, but still.....)

\"not outstanding\"- What happen to MOE efforts, if parents always have such mindsets?

          KTKS:
          mindays:

Mr Kwek Hiok Chuang wasn't a principal of elite schools either, yet we could see his extraordinary leadership capabilities. In fact, he was the principal of the following schools:

          Pioneer Junior College
          Anderson Secondary School
          North View Secondary School
Yuying Secondary School (formerly known as Yock Eng High School)
          Gan Eng Seng Secondary School

Mr Low Chun Meng (graduated from HCI) was the:
Principal of Manjusri Sec (5 years)
Vice principal of NJC (2.5 years)
          MOE Curriculum Planning Officer (4years)

The principal may have changed, but the overall structure of NYJC still remains.

What's most important is the teachers in NYJC. The teachers are the ones who teach your DD/DS (direct impact). So, the change of principal shouldn't bring much of a worry. In fact, we should embrace all principals and give them a chance to showcase their abilities. We should not look at their background and cast unnecessary opinions (usually to fire down). I think that is not only being discouraging but also shows a lack of insight in things.

Mr Kwek has led nyjc for the past 10 years hence there is no ground for comparison between the 2 principals' leadership styles. Aren't you concerned at all if your DC joins nyjc next year with a new principal? I do agree that we should give others a chance but practically not every parent would volunteer his DC as the 'guinea pig'.

Are you suggesting that the nyjc teachers will lead the new principal instead? What if the teachers decide to take a breather from the old system? Singaporeans are practical you know. We won't reject a more relaxed environment.

Mindays, I know you will defend nyjc fiercely whenever you detect the slightest negative comment. Please stop. :xedfingers:

I do not understand why do you see it as a \"guinea pig\". If you change your perspective, it would be an \"opportunity\". Many people do not succeed because they harbour the former thoughts and reject the latter. That's why the government has always encouraged entreprenuership and consant innovation, but sadly, pragmatic Singaporeans always prefer the norm (which I myself can understand).

If what you say is true about \"What if the teachers decide to take a breather from the old system?\", they would have left the school and opt for a \"tutor\" job and not wait till a principal is changed. Teachers in NYJC are generally passionate in teaching their students (go to their open house and ask around).

KTKS, this is a personal statement. I don't like the way how you use personal attack to discuss a matter. I feel that you are not being respectful and courteous. This should not be a parent's behaviour. Please stop.

KTKS, it is normal to be apprehensive about a school’s direction and future when there is a leadership change, and your concerns are completely understandable. MOE rotates its Principals regularly as older Principals retire and new Principals are appointed as part of leadership renewal. I believe that MOE would only appoint these Principals if they are confident in their ability to lead the school. 61 schools next year will have new Principals and I doubt that the students of these schools will become ‘guinea pigs’.

COP merely reflects the popularity of a school and using it as an indicator of a Principal’s leadership is very myopic. Besides, I think it’s good for a Principal to have a broad experience being in both neighbourhood schools and top schools over someone who has only been at top schools throughout their career. Only time will tell if the new principal is able to take NYJC to greater heights.

Thanks Leeton for sharing. It's very disturbing when tactless people here tried to aggravate my feelings with arrows of sarcasm.

Moe principals rotate regularly but mr kwek of nyjc was an exception as he was there for much longer. To moe, 'all schs are good schs' and hence 'all staff are good staff'. But we all know that there are great disparities between leaders and teachers of 'branded schs' and 'neighbourhood schs'.

I won't label students of a sch as guinea pigs if its leader transfer is of the same level: pri to pri, sec to sec , sec to jc if convincing enough, etc.

I am aware that there were precedents of principals being promoted from sec schs to jcs. However for nyjc, it's a change of a popular, excellent & experienced jc's principal to a neighbourhood sec sch's principal who did not take manjusri to greater heights during the 5 years.
Most teachers will take the cue from their leaders on cultivating passion in teaching. Their attitude will change with the sch's culture.

On hindsight, mr low may emerge as a good leader given a chance but who will give my DC a chance if things don't work out in the next 2 years? Some leaders are too relaxed with their staff, too rigid or aren't empathetic as can be seen from EpicReborn's plight.

It's alright folks. I am clear of my jc elimination process now.
                Wish everyone luck in nyjc!

If you have found the recent posts sarcastic, you should really take a quick check of who the author is. You used strong words to launch personal attacks, which was absolutely unnesscary. When it comes to leadership, I don't think you have the capacity and the adequate knowledge to pass a statement \"Some leaders are too relaxed with their staff, too rigid or aren't empathetic as can be seen from EpicReborn's plight.\" You don't seem to know what LEADERSHIP is, based on your unprofound posts. I don't wish to respond to your post till a more intelligible one appears. Let time reveal everything. We shall then see the popularity of NYJC based on their open house, in a couple of months time (2.5 to be a little exact).

Why must Mr Kwek retire next year of all time?

Not doubting the new principal's capability but there will be changes and uncertainties... :slapshead:

I share your sentiment. I know of a JC whereby its JC1 retention rate suddenly shot up and another JC experienced a plunge in its A level result after their new principals took over.
                      Hope for the best! :xedfingers:

Years ago when my DD1's secondary sch changed its principal, there was a massive transfer of good and experienced teachers out from its sch.

So this is another possibility. I haven't experienced any good when there's change of principal yet so I can't give a positive comment. Till then.
