DSA 2017

By mid year p6, schools would have stopped all CCA s and other non acad avtivities, and the rest of the time will be spent on revision and drills. Based on my DD1 experience this year, it was really dry towards the second half of the year.
So if there is a chance to let the kids enjoy their non academic activities during the first half of the year, please do so. Afterall, its a holistic experience for them. The kids should remember their primary school education as being fun when they look back. -

Hi Ganjiong spider,
Reason being : want to better focus & totally concentrate for PSLE - is it a valid reason?tutorchen:
Hi Ganjiongspider,
DSA seeks to promote holistic education and provide students an opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission to a secondary school.
If the student's English DSA selection test result is impressive and school results for other subjects are relatively good, he/she still has a good chance. If there is valid reason that why the student does not participate in CCA at P6, it will not affect his/her application. If there is no valide reason, it may affect the application.
Hope it helps.
Cheers!
And what is the school mark range for subject domain (Eng, or Math) in order to be consider good? Eg. Is 85% & above acceptable? Or the selection criteria only look at 90% & above range?
Thanks!
Hi Tutorchen,
I do not think it would be accepted as a valid reason.
Result wise, school mark as 85% and above is a minimum criteria. If have good competition result, i.e. gold medal, would be even better.
Also need to get at least top 20-30 in the DSA selection test, to get an invitation for interview.
Good luck! -
My kids did not join any CCA. CCA not compulsory in their primary school.
Submitted other credentials eg. competitions awards/medals, music cert, volunteer work, school projects, etc. Both via academic domain. -
Thank you everybody for the advise. Highly appreciated! ^_^

I believe there have already been a few responses, however I still would like to make this point haha. If the student were to drop their CCA and happened to be asked about it during the DSA interview, s/he would be in quite a bad situation as the interviewers would likely question why s/he was unable to cope with CCA while preparing for the PSLE and possibly look unfavourably upon it because secondary school is even more hectic. So, I would definitely urge you to let your child continue with his/her CCA!

Hi mononoke,
Thanks for your advice! I was thinking likewise too. Better stay with the CCA just in case… -
Hi, may I know for gep students, do they stand good chance of getting CO from RI or HCI if they do not have any competition awards? As my DS is not keen in competitions and he is average in gep, I am deciding whether to get him interested in MO and or to focus on PSLE?
Thanks in advance! -

It is good to have MO but not necessary to go for it as it does not provide a CO in this aspect. Aside from the academic results / GAT if required, I personally think the DSA interview plays a vital role to determine the selection process. I know during DD's time in 2014, 7 Geppers in her school were unsuccessful in RGS despite having having good grades. In NYGH, the unsucessful rate was higher than expected as their selection process was not looking for grades with flying colors.
As long yr DS is articulative in presenting his thoughts rationally and logically, it will certainly earn him an extra edge. If he is not keen with competition, I would not encourage him to go for it. Be on his own and focus well on P6 SA1 and PSLE. Best of luck to yr DS. -
