Sad, that these days, parents have to defend about such things. I used to get whacked if I don’t meet the targets set by my dad. Now we have to defend ourselves for not buying luxury goods that we promised to our kids as reward for excelling in their studies. My sympathies with you and your son.

I think the main issue was not about expectation, but the the tone of that sms that she sent to him..

No. The main issue is that the reporter has misreported the facts and chose to pick on points that were out of context. It feeds the hate culture that is permeating the world today. If one wants to hate, it is easy to pick on anything - the expectation, the DS, the SMS. In case you are wondering, her son is now facing even more stress than he ever was under while preparing for the exam. His friends told him that his name was revealed in the papers and he is embarrassed and traumatised by all the hate from uninformed people. Please spare the boy and his family from the vitriol.

        Misreported ?
Nah, exploited the words of a mum who was a little disappointed with her son's results. The depths reporters go to generate \"news\" that can get eyeballs. That badly written article generated quit a few clicks, though I am not sure why a parent's typical reaction to her son's result and parenting are worthy of reporting.

Honestly if all we care about is effort, all the celebrations should be right after PSLE , PSLE results day would just be another day. Hand on heart , how many parents were nervously waiting to see the T score , even though the child has choosen DSA already

Does it mean that as long as daughter meets the affiliated cut off and put as 1st choice, she will get in? It's worrying to think of this for the next 1 month before I get a closure.

Affiliated COP is only effective if and only if it's the 1st choice AFAIK.

i put her affiliated school as 1st choice and she met the minimum criteria for NA.

          sorry what is AFAIK?[/quote]
Hi sorry may I ask which sch you put it as first choice?

            Thank you careermum

The reasons cited by you are the exact same reason I am suggesting my daughter to join RV high IP. We went to open house last weekend and I was very much impressed with the curriculum support, teachers, dedicated principal and motivated students. They have my daughters preferred CCA of robotics as well.

Now the question is we need to put 6 choices.

DD was greatly interested in RGS. But her t-score is below the COP by 4 points.

We are hoping with RV high as first choice, DD can secure a place as being SAP they will consider her to score as 258 (256+2).

Thinking of putting SCGS, Methodist girls, Cedar as the next choices after RV high. Which other schools would be suitable to put as options?

Like to add my 2cents worth - if distance is not a great obstacle n if COP is met, I strongly suggest putting Cedar as 1st choice instead of RV.

Not discrediting RV (as all schools are good), but I think VJC's A level results are slightly better than RV. VJC is also much sought after.

              Hi dd scored 256+2(HMT chinse)

We live walkable distance to RV high near boon lay mrt.
Thinking of putting it as first choice due to proximity to home and good academic support.
Please suggest any other suitable schools.
DD is first child so would really appreciate your input

Firstly congratulations for the good results. The high t-score that your dd gets allows her to have more choices. You are so lucky that you are within walkable distance from RV which is a good school with IP, and your dd did well enough to have the chance to go there.

From personal experience, going to a school within walking distance gives one a lot of advantages. We stay in Bishan. Last year, my ds got 259+2, good enough to go to all boy's schools except RI. As both RI and Catholic High School are within walking distance, my ds put RI as 1st choice and CHS as 2nd choice. He did not put other better COP schools in between these 2, due to the distance.

Now my ds is in CHS and very happy. He has sufficient sleep, need not rush with the morning crowd in public transport, no need to be stuck in traffic jams had we the parents sent him, and he can go to school anytime whenever there are activities, CCA etc. It is so convenient. Also, with the extra sleep, he is always feeling fresh. Conversely, he says his friends who stay at the various corners of S'pore have to wake up at 5+am. They are tired, sometimes late for school and activities, and have less time to study.

              Congrats mother777
Careermum hit the nail on the head.
Distance does make a huge difference. It is so very tempting to send to the best school the score can get you and I see so many doing this but if there is a good school near by that DC can get into it's a significant advantage.Like Careermum DS, my DS1 also opted for nearer school and has done well

What if it is the kid who wants to choose the farther school?
DS is impressed by a sch 50mins away from our hse by MRT (DTL then CC line)....I'm a not sure, but he seems so passionate, should I dissuade him? We visited the school and it was like \"love-at-first-sight\" for DS, I like the sch myself, but it is the distance that I'm not sure....but now DS seems determined to put that sch as first choice.

We visited other schools near our house, but this farther school is still his # 1 fav.....the other nearer schs all need at least 30mins of bus commute as well....so no sch within walking distance.

                Anyone with experience to share?

Unless you have serious doubts about the school, and if you have outlined the disadvantages of daily long distance travel to your son, I would suggest that you let him decide.

My kid’s score is 252. What school should I consider? Prefer girls’ school and I live near Kovan.

Her score is not that high and will have problem getting into St Nicholas.

                        Kiddy Angel:

My DD s T score is 261+2. Any chance to get into NYGH or RGS?

If this year (2016) NYGH COP is 265 -
                        Then, 261 + 2 = 263 :
Low chance, as your daughter T-score do not meet 265, and MOE latest policy does not permit appeal, if do not meet COP.

Unless this year NYGH COP Drop to 263, and your daughter's 263 has very high decimal points, possible. But if her decimal points is low ...

                        Qn is :
do you think this year NYGH COP likely to fall to 263, or more likely to go up ?

Anyone have statistics of the %tage of NYPS girls, who scored 250 & above, for last year (2015), vs this year 2016 ?

If this year (2016) more NYPS girls scored 250 & above, compared to last year (2015), means more NYPS girls qualify to go back to affiliated NYGH, leading to lesser vacancies left available for non-affiliates to enter, then possible for NYGH COP to move up.

But if the reverse is true, then COP may drop.

                        RGS :
Your +2 not applicable, as RGS is not a SAP school.

Her chance of entering RGS is still there, if COP this year remain at 261. But if happen to shoot up to 262, cannot.

Anyway, just put down these 2 hot schools, inside your list of 6 choices.

When the MOE computer posting algorithm process, is not based on \"whoever first apply into the school, first served\" policy. Not like that.

It process according to \"whoever has a higher T-score first : then will process this candiate's Requirement first, see which school choices this pupil had requested for\".
Computer first sort the thousands of psle candidates by T-score first, before start to process, one by one :
starting from the Top scholar across the island, from this batch, until the bottom last psle candidate in the cohort, whoever he / she is.

Am sorry but am confused here. Probably it may be also be because am a rookie to the system. If that's the case then for sure everyone should end up with their school of choice as long as their marks are within the COP and they have listed the school as one of the six choices isn't ? A Friend shared his son's experience last year wherein which his Son ended up with his 6th school of choice though his Tscore was equal to the 3rd choice! :? Fortunately their appeal was accepted and he got into his 3rd choice.
