Blue Dolphine:
Hi, Dear Parents, I am new to this Forum. We are going through the S1 Option form now and would like to put RI as our 1st choice. Can any parents offer any advice on taking MEP and 3rd language. We will only choose one out of the two as I don't think my boy can cope with both. Which one would be more useful or easier to study? Would really appreciate some feedbacks/advice from the parents 前辈. Many thanks!
Hi Blue Dolphine,
Students in RI are only allowed one elective, be it MEP, AEP, RSP or third language. In your ds' case, it will be either third language or MEP.
For MEP, students are to go through a selection test for placement into the programme sometime after Christmas, if I'm not wrong. The selection test comprises a theory paper and a practical test. Successful applicants are required to continue their private instrument tuition for the duration of their participation in the MEP. They are also expected to join a Musical Groups CCA (as core CCA).
I can't be sure but I think a ABRSM grade 7 distinction is one of the prerequisite for application. More information on MEP application will be make available in the welcome kit on Reporting Day.
As for which elective is easier to study, it would depend on your ds. But it's common for students to withdraw from third language elective after the first semester. -

Hi can i check is there a requirement to take a sports cca in RI? If they take a club cca, does it mean they have to take 2? Many TIA!
Every student must join at least one Core CCA. As long as the club CCA is under the Core CCAs group, there's no need to take on another CCA.
As what Sha mentioned, the students will go through CCA profiling and selection tests before they know which Core CCA they are allocated to.
However, it's not unusual for the boys to take on a Core CCA and a Merit CCA. -
Dear metz2
Thanks very much for your reply! It’s very helpful of you. That gives us some idea of how it works. The only problem is that we can only indicate whether we want to take 3rd language on the S1 form now. So if we can’t get into MEP later, we won’t have a chance to take 3rd language. But I guess if a lot of students drop the 3rd language in year 2, it is really not too easy to handle it.
Thanks again! -
If ur DS does not take 3rd Lang in sec 1-4, he will not be allowed to attempt 3rd Lang at A levels in JC.
However, if he doesn’t take MEP in sec1, he can still opt for Music at A levels H2 level when he is in JC1. -
Can I find out how the teachers prepare the boys for the O Levels ORAL exams for Higher Chinese? Many boys including ds only converse in English!!

Hi Blue Dolphine,
Glad that I can help
Your ds might want to opt for 3rd Lang now and apply for MEP after Reporting Day. Once accepted, he can then decide which one he prefers. Withdrawal from 3rd Lang can be done.
Taking an elective might come in handy as it can replace one of the Humanities subjects towards GPA Computation.
Btw, entry into the MEP at Year 3 is still possible but will be on a case-by-case basis. -

Hi, am new here and hope to join the RI family next year
May I know if Japanese as a 3rd language is taken in the school campus or at MOE Language Centre at Bishan? Thanks. -
Dear parents/ students,
My DS will be joining RI Year 1 next year.
May I know what is typically covered during the Year 1 Reporting Day in Dec? Any important talks?
Any advice what we should do if my DS cannot report on that day? e.g., purchase of school uniforms? textbooks, …
We will be going overseas and may not make it on time to come back by the Reporting Day (22 Dec). Would really appreciate your advice so that we can do the necessary preparation before we depart, especially getting ready the things necessary for Year 1 before school reopens next year.
:thankyou:
