更多本地学生 自费到中国留学
越来越多新加坡学生自费到中国留学，修读本科课程的学生也不再只限于中文系，有的甚至到中国修读法律、医学等。
中国驻新加坡大使馆提供的数据显示，2002年只有583名新加坡人到中国留学，2007年增至1480人，2008年增加到2155人，2009年则多达3198人。
这些学生以短期（1年内）进修的人数最居多，去年有1516人，占了留学生总数约一半。修读本科课程的则有801人，占了留学生总数的约25%。
中国大使馆教育参赞周建平指出，目前在中国留学的新加坡学生主要分布在北大、复旦、清华、华中师范、上海交通、南京中医药等10多所大学。
选修科目更多元化
新加坡学生到中国修读的科目也更多元化了，包括法律、新闻学、医学、中医药、历史、哲学、经济、工商管理和国际政治等。
毕业自先驱初级学院（Pioneer Junior College）的温颖琳（20岁）去年放弃了本地3所大学工程和经济课程的入学机会，向亲戚借了每年RMB23,000（约S$4600）的学费，毅然到中国复旦大学留学。她是复旦大学首名以中文修读法律系的新加坡籍留学生。
温颖琳认为，与其和众多工程系毕业生争工作，倒不如成为本地少数拥有中国法学文凭的学生，加上“现在有很多公司到中国投资，即使不从事法律相关事务，将来还是能有较多工作机会。”
除了中国崛起对留学生有吸引力，复旦留学生办公室副主任张怡认为，新加坡积极推动浸濡计划也是原因之一。一些新加坡学生就因为曾到复旦附中浸濡，参观过大学，最后选择到那里升学。（联合早报） -

yes! That’s impressive. Actually i know there there are some impressive scholars who have chosen to further their education in China too!

$4600 per year to study law in China in not expensive. If her objective is to be a lawyer for Chinese businesses (since China is the next big economic super power), it is the right path. There is no way S’pore can match for this field of study.
She may be an exception in her Chinese / Higher Chinese ability as compared to the general S’pore standard. -

Within our family, we had this discussion during our gathering on saturday. We are in fact divided. My sil with a P6 son who is struggling with MT hopes for the change. We felt that she has not done enough to support the learning of MT so this should not be a easy way out. Meanwhile my bil and myself were like... no way they should change.
The reason for sharing my views in the forum recently regarding MT (article can also be found in the portal publication) is not because my children's Chinese standard is very high. On the contrary, my P6 girl's Chinese standard is atrocious. Nevertheless, she'll just have to buck up and study hard to attain the desired standard.
There are other things in life that I feel is more important than just achieving stirling academic results. One of them is that as Chinese (I'm 100% Singaporean), we should be well grounded in our roots and culture, where it can only be done if our Chinese are of reasonable standards. -

Ya, for Mr Ng to make that comment, Mr Lee should have already endorsed it. So, I don't think he's not in agreement with Mr Ng. To me, it's more like Mr Lee, with his SAP school background and being bilingual now wants to step in to lend support to this policy change. Mr Ng is not in a good position now to provide further justifications after netizens exposed the 1999 interview he and his son did with zaobao.
I think Mr Ng would never make that comment if this was not already discussed beforehand. But for him to present this policy change (if it does happen), is even less convincing because of his background. GWIM?tamarind:

Thanks for posting this news. This is the front page news on the Zao Bao newspaper today. The Chinese news mentioned that many parents have sent in their feedback. My feeling is that Mr Lee is not in agreement with Mr Ng ?
So, I am not feeling too optimistic
