Geylang Methodist Secondary School
-
Hi all,
I’m considering GMSS as a choice school for my DD now. Is this school nice? What are the niche areas of the school and are there a lot of positivity and vibrancy in the school? -
I have many good friends from Geylang Methodist School (Secondary)
Established in 1923, the school has a rich history.
COP is 223 for year 2015, not that bad in the district. In fact, top in the Geylang Area (Manjusri Sec, Broadrick Sec, Macpherson Sec). It is seen that the COP for non-affiliation is pretty okay, most of the students there are alright and a handful of them are brilliant. A student from the GCE O LEVEL 2015 scored 9 A1s, and a few of them achieved L1R5 raw 6. It is a value-added school.
The new principal Mr Wee Tat Chuen is said to enforce discipline into every students there. For example no using of handphones in class but fine in canteen etc. He is reasonable and he conducts checks personally. Discipline wise, yes.
It is highly accessible too, with just a 2 minute walk from the MRT station (Aljunied EW9).
School compound is pretty big as the school has expanded with a new football field built. So imagine the young students having fun during PE lessons.
GMSS has affiliation to ACJC too, giving the students there an extra -2 bonus points.
School culture is excellent, with care and concern are also apart of GMSS education. Teachers are experienced and committed to help the students. (some even stayed back till 8-9pm during the period of O levels). Christianity values are inculcated to every student, ensuring that they have a sound moral upbringing.
I must say, this school has a bright future ahead. -

Hi all,
My daughter is interested in the curriculum offered by GMSS however I have concerns putting her in a school in such close proximity in Geylang Especially when we see thugs and police at the met station.
Can any parents who have had kid/s studying in the school provide some insight on the general safety and security issue.
TIA -
I’m in the same dilemma, my girl went to the open house last week and loves the school very much, the COP is lower than ther T- scores, high chance that she will get in. But as parents, we are concern about the environment outside the school, and the name does sound good… Another concern is, it is affiliated to Gelyang Methodist Primary, this could affect the real COP.

I looked through the Google Maps and realised that GMSS is situated very near to Aljunied as well as Paya Lebar.Hi all,

In fact GMSS is located at Geylang East Central, near a public library that is a stone throw away from the school. It is unlikely that the students will be badly influenced by the Geylang area as after school, most of them should head over to the train station EW9 and commute from there. There shouldn't be too much of a problem. Furthermore, I have not heard of any safety and security issues regarding the Geylang area (towards Kallang), so security and safety should be okay -

It is a Methodist institution that has affiliation with ACJC as well. The environment should not be a problem as it is located in the \"cleaner\" side of Geylang (towards Paya Lebar), so area wise it should be fine. There are a few condominiums surrounding GMSS as well (rest assured)

Thanks mindays. That's the dilemma, Tried taking the train to the school yesterday with my girl and I noticed there were policemen questioning thugs at both exits of the mrt. And there's an adult shop at the row of shophouse just beside the mrt. :faint: that really got me feeling uncomfortable.yippie131:

Would be great to totally avoid that station.
