Hi all, I need some advise.

dd scored 8 points in her o level exams. -2 cos of CCA would mean 6 points. Below are her scores:
      Eng A1
      E Math A1
      A Math A1
      Chi A1
      SS/Geog A2
      Chem A2
      Phy A2
      Bio B3
She doesn't actually understand a lot in Physics but usually score A for it in Sec 4. She doesn't want to be scientist or engineer in the future, but then I asked her what uni course or subject combi she has in mind then she says she dunno. She doesn't know what stream to go to cos she simply wants Math and Econs H2. The other 2 subjects she dk. (She doesn't know herself and her interests cos she's a late bloomer). I'm also confused. DH doesn't want her to go to schools in the east and north. (He prefers Central and West). Her teachers advised her to choose a more lively, less mugger and competitive kind of environment cos she was from neighbourhood sch. (COP 208++ not very sure now). She likes to write stories and essays. For JAE application I just asked her to try (in order) RI art, NJ sci, AJ sci, NJ art, AC art, AC sci. Pls advise me on the subjects she should take and the school she should go to... I don't mind getting her to appeal. Happy (Chinese) New Year!
Subject choice - I would advise against choosing Physics if she already finds it hard to understand at O level. A level Physics will require more understanding and there is much more to learn. However, if she is better at Chem and Bio, she could take 1 or 2 sciences. Or she could take 2 non-science subjects and go to the arts stream.

I don't know much about JCs so can't help about choosing school. Subject choice is more important, I feel.

Thanks! Yup, she told me before submitting the application that she won't be taking Physics or Bio (cos B3) ... She did mention considering Humanities Programme (LEGM) or sci/hybrid combi (CMEG or CMEL or even CMEEll). We saw the respective subject syllabus and I was quite worried cos altogether the diff combi seem quite content heavy and she doesn't really read much about Lit nor linguistics. It's probably harder to score for Ell cos less people take it.

I don't think any A level combination can be regarded as light! They are all pretty heavy, including the double science combinations. If she doesn't have clear interests, then go with her strengths. Eg. Lit requires a sensitivity to language and lit, Geog is more factual etc. I don't know what ELL is like.

Based on last year's COP, RI arts and NJ science are probably out.

If your dd doesn't like Physics and Bio, it's best not to take them. There's quite a leap from O levels to A levels. Even more so for Chemistry. I was thinking a hybrid course might be something she'd consider. Provided she is comfortable with Chem of course. With the humanities programme, literature is compulsory. Is she comfortable doing lit when she didn't do it at O levels?

Yup, just wanted to try our luck šŸ˜› Hmm, If she can't jump across I guess I'll advise her to take H1 Chem. I'm not sure if she will be comfortable with Lit, but she might want to try it out. However, after some more thought, I think I will advise her not to take Lit because the different texts and poems can be interpreted differently, and I don't know what Cambridge accepts. Also, she has to get used to the subject while coping with commitments...

                Jtoh,

What is hybrid and how is it differentiated from the normal arts, science stream?

For arts course, students take 3 arts subjects + 1 contrasting subject, usually math.
For science course, you can do three science subjects + 1 contrasting subject, or 2 science + 2 arts.

The 2 science + 2 arts combination is usually referred to as hybrid. I believe in most JCs it's classified under Science. But there may be some who classify it under Arts. It's a bit ambiguous bec it's 2 sci and 2 arts.
