Dear Parents, have you read the new PN from the school?


I am very concerned that the AS is now scraped. At P5 and P6, having no remedial lesson in school is a very scary idea. HCL lesson is also reduced from 2 hour to 1 hour.

While other top schools are already preparing their P5 by conducting extra lessons for all students, loading them with mountains of homework and endless drilling each day, I am worried that ours is way too relax and unprepared for PSLE.

1 hour of HCL lesson is way too short. Honestly you can’t do much in that one hour.

While I agree weaker students need more help, the above average students also need some push and extra support to excel in the national examination too. Otherwise they will become too complacent.

In many of the other top schools, apart from math activity book, they are using assessment books such as on sponge for their extra lessons. We have nothing. It appears that our school is not doing enough that’s why PSLE math results is very bad every year. Only a handful got A-star.

In a way, I still like the AS structure where students are banded. Stronger students are stretched to their maximum potential whereas weaker students are given extra help to catch up with their peers. They learn at different pace but the end result is all students benefit from the programme and no one is left out. Why stop AS?

I do not mean to be rude but the idea of scraping the compulsory remedial lessons/ AS from P3 to P6, especially P5 and P6 is totally ridiculous and insane. The new leader is making too much drastic changes!

I still believe one needs to put in effort to see the results. If you do not give your plant sufficient nutrients, it will not grow well.

My dear child does not have private tuition from P1 to P4 so does it mean that I should start sourcing for external help?

This year P6 is the first batch of Guinnea pig. God bless that they do well in the PSLE.

Are the school hours at the holding site longer, that’s why the AS is being scrapped?

Potter, when did you get the PN? Both my girls are not aware. Parents chat group has also not started discussing this either. I believe many are still kept in the dark.

My DD1 will be in P5 next year and I am concern too. Instead of just quietly issuing the PN which I did not even know there is one, school should officially inform the parents and let us know what are the plans that you have to prepare the students for PSLE. I believe at this point, the upper primary parents need some assurance. :slapshead:

This is bad news. Even though my girls have tuition, I still feel AS and 2 hours HCL lessons very important.

In the upcoming level briefing, I hope the school will update the parents.

I checked with my friend whose kid in P5. They received the letter on Fri. It is confirmed no more AS (scrapped) and lesson time for HCL will be reduced to an hour. The students whatapps group is celebrating whereas parents group is panicking. I am :yikes: of the sudden change too.

if P5 HCL been reduced to only one hour per / each week, from previously 2 hours in the past : need to find out from your Chinese HOD -

a) what content taught had been missing inside 1 hr, per lesson ?

b) what's the rationale / reason(s), for changing HCL, from 2 hr to become 1 hr ?

One hour is short.

My girls still have not received the letters. Maybe only the P5 and P6 were informed last week. Other levels not yet.

All the while in PCPS, compulsory Academic Support (AS) starts from P3. In other schools, some term it as remedial or extra lessons. Students are banded into different Eng & Math classes according to previous year results.

I am surprised that this is now scrapped. I have never heard of any school that has no remedial lesson for upper primary students. Have you?

1 hour of HCL lesson is indeed too short. What can the teachers cover in just 1 hour? I am sure parents will ask in the level briefing but I also heard from other parents, now we can no longer ask questions in the level briefing. No more open discussion and can only drop your question privately in the Q&A box. Not sure how true.

My gal is p3…oredy received the pn of cutting hcl lesson end of last week…which detailed that as will now only be provided to weaker students.


Indeed quite a big change this yr. For eg. The p3 chi compo will now be 3 pics intead of 1. But i noticed the zhuowen booklet was not provided oredy .

She had more homework on weekday n weekend compared to my elder boy time 3yrs ago who hardly had any work. In fact last weekend…she had to write a chi compo.

I thk the teacher is cutting down on times for them to do worksheet/workbook in class…rather let them do at hm instead to save time.

But the 1hr hcl…really hope they would reconsider it. Cos the lunch oredy takes 45mins. Not worth staying so short hr…especially for those kids need to take extra bus or hv ppl come specifically to fetch.

My DD1 belongs to the group that is not strong academically but is neither consider as weak. For sure she needs academic support but will not be selected that kind.

This year maybe she can still cope without the AS but I can't said so for next year as it is going to be a big jump from P4 yet there is no remedial classes.

I am still unable to understand why the sudden change.

Regarding homework, my P3 has more than my P4. My P4 does not have hw everyday. :? Once a while 2-3 pages of Math and chinese 习字. That's all!! Relax until I see already also get cold sweat. It appears that P4 is still a honeymoon year.

The extra time due to shorten of HCL is given to science remedial.
sometimes its hard to achieve balance for everyone to be happy. I recalled I was one of the parents who complained peichun had too many supp at P3, cos i felt the eng/math is not necessary. I also complained now my elderP6 at another sch had supp every wed/thur even right after cny..hah..

I think we have to work harder as parents if we think sch not giving enuff work..
