Janet, ‘adversity’ could make someone grow faster. It could be a good experience to go through now. Think of it positively and best of luck to your ds in whatever he takes. Keep encouraging him.

Totally agree about having good attitude.Charnic:
Hi, Janet,
Sorry to hear that. Pls encourage your son to accept what HE has planned for him. In my working life, I have witnessed enough cases of success which does not commensurate with qualifications. If you asked me, what I think constitute to the SUCCESS of a person is really the attitude. This is the ONE that can make or break a person. Qualification is just a piece of paper and I believe there are more than one path to achieve this. Please dun take it too hard and stay positive. Take care !
I agree. Attitude is more important than academic qualifications.
Everything happens for a reason n when 1 door is closed, another will open.
This experience will make your DS a stronger n better person.
Hope that he will succeed in his DAE.

My DS only did average for his PSLE, scoring mid-230s. He and all of us were pretty disappointed at that time although my DS has always been quite disciplined in his studies.
However, he continued to be disciplined and I could see he had put in a lot of effort in his studies. Sometimes, I had to ask him to sleep early and don't put too much pressure on himself.
His effort paid off for his \"O\" Levels where his results are beyond all our expectations.
Just make the best of the situation as it doesn't help to drown ourselves in our disappointment. Jiayou! -
I don’t know how poly works. Can Janet’s son enrol in 1 poly and transfer to another poly next year without having to repeat year 1?
-
If is same course nature, maybe can.
But think Janet’s son been offered Commerce in MI, while his interests is towards Science areas.
This part, not sure if her son want to appeal to MI, change back to Science stream since his interests is more towards Sciences, while at the same time awaiting DAE results from the Polytechnic. -

Moving to a different poly, you have to restart all over again.
Within the same poly, you can transfer or retain credits in some modules. -

He has C for science...so not offered science stream. At the time of JAE, we wanted to be sure he will get a place given that he is under dragon year. A pity we didn't put infocomm as first choice but it's history. After JAE submission, we were then told that we had to see the cop intake for 2017. His choice course was 21 points in 2016 but 19 for 2017. Rather risky too. If he had been posted to poly during the appeal, we will definitely stick to that course in the poly offered. If is same course nature, maybe can.

Janet, all the best to your son, hope his DAE will be successful. Meantime, do have a plan B just in case.

Hi Janet,
Do encourage your son. Maybe with the extra year he'll manage alright with CL and GP.
Has your boy been attending Orientation / lessons in MI since last Friday ? How does he find MI (teachers, peers, school environment & culture) ? If you wanna spare your boy from endless waiting / uncertainties / disappointments, you may wish to consider (again) if MI is a better option for him.
Good Luck & All The Best to your boy !! -

Comfort your son.
thanks zbear.zbear:

it was a mistake made to put MI as the first choice...but no point harping on what has happened but to move on, appeal and hope for the best. i hope this process will make him understand how important education is and study harder for his future.
Just try to appeal. At the same time attend MI. If in the end all things fail, study 1 year in MI then try to apply poly with his O level results again next year. There will always be a solution to every problem.
Studying hard can only reach personal best but making the right choices at any one point will facilitate a more favourable outcome. -
Agree with TA. Appeal to all the poly and try to get into an acceptable course under the IT faculty. If accepted, work hard and try to change course in year 2.
Continue attending class at MI. Maybe he will grow to let Commerce. It is an OK course and he just may enjoy himself. It’s important to build up friendships during the secondary and JC years. -
Janet,
You may consider letting your DS retake some of the O-level subjects as a private candidate while attending MI in parallel. By early next year, he could then opt to continue MI or apply his course of interest with his new results.
