[PSLE MT] PSLE less weightage in Chinese / Mother Tongue

Our primary 5 standard is only equivalent to primary 2 in China. If the standard is lowered again, it is going to be like kindergarten in China.

Agree. Morever, we are not in a pure ang mo environment. In Singapore, we have many Chinese radio stations, many Chinese programes, many easy assessable Chinese books, many peoples around us speak Mandarin. Even an eye specialist I know of, starts to speak Mandarin with me.

If one read an English story book a week, is he reading a Chinese story book a week too? If one watch 2 hours of English programes on TV or in cinema, is he doing the same to Chinese? If one study English literature, is he doing the same to Chinese literature? If one is reading English newspaper daily, is he doing the same on Chinese newspaper? If one converse English at home every day, did he every think of converse in full Mandarin the following day? Its a matter of how much effort is put in.

Someone told me, I don't know how true is it. Since young, our PM had to read Malay newspaper aloud to his dad everyday.

My kids are not immersed in the Chinese environment. In fact, both are reading long English novels by the age of 5. But my girl is also able to read long Chinese chapter books before 7 years old, and my younger boy is also reading Chinese quite well.

Both of them do not spend a lot of time learning Chinese everyday. They both started at Berries at 4 years old, and have been reading Chinese books daily (only a few minutes).

The age of 3 to 6 is the best time to learn Chinese, at this age, kids are capable of learning enough Chinese words to be able to read at least 80% of Chinese newspapers, and they can do so effortlessly.

If parents are able to build a strong foundation in Chinese before the age of 7, by using the right methods (no hanyu pinyin), then Chinese will be very easy when the kids are in primary/secondary school.

Parents can also ask kids to read Chinese out loud everyday. Believe me, this is very enjoyable

This girl is incredible!!! She is in the GEP class in RGPS. That means she is also very good in her English and Maths. Looks like she has the potential to be the top student (from foreign talent group again???) in next year PSLE.

this is getting more stupid by the day


they should instead spend the millions to go change / improve the teaching methods for the chinese language, employ more chinese language teachers who can deliver and know how to deliver. if their kids are good, they should be able to grasp it. if not, it simply means their kids are not as good as those who mastered all the subjects

changing the weightage is the most ridiculous way to solve the symptoms of the real problem - which is the teaching method
