DSA 2017

I am not aware that there is such a competition called Bilingual Olympiad. I am not sure dd's school even participated!! So the top 30 winners are not from a nation-wide kind of competition.
My friend told me she wanted to let her P6 GEP daughter try DSA under this domain but found out that her daughter had already rejected to do a \"test\" earlier, whereby the teacher will select the best (sleepy's step 1).
And don't forget, a MS child's chances of being selected may be further lowered if he/she is studying in a GEP centre. :siam:
Friend suspect that the majority of the winners are either from China or Malaysia.

Yes, for DSA Sports, must look at competition results (1st or 2nd preferably consistently), some schools look at NAPFA results and also GAT and P5/6 acad results (above a certain threshold). In addition, some schools also require you to show if you have other talents or VIA projects, ie music or arts or volunteerism.....so I think it is not just sports talent that they look at unless you are already winning competitions for the nation already.Looking at the bilingual competition and maybe science Olympiad for science domain, like what sleepy say, step 1 must be chosen by teachers to represent the school. Only after that comes step 2, be in the top 30 of the competition to dsa successfully. To a certain extent, this is like a 变象的general academic ability domain only to me, though it has been demolished. From what I hear and observe, school tend to choose the top student for that subject from P4 to P5, or top 5 in standard to represent the school in such competition usually as most times can only send up to a maximum 5 students per school from what I observe. I mean , cannot be a case where schools send students to 送死 in a competition right, 学校也是要有面子的。So, back to square one again. So, in order to dsa successfully in bilingual/ maths/ science domains : must produce the results to get chosen by teachers for competition first. The above is just my personal observation / view, don't have to agree with me and sorry if I had poured cold water.
I cannot speak for the sports domain as I have no experience in this area, but I think it may be worse perhaps for dsa sports to the 4大天王 schools? Not only must 会走会跑会跳 and win national competitions, 脑子还要会飞 to produce good enough academic results I guess? Perhaps parents who dsa sports successfully to the 4 Top IP schools can share more?
I think on the whole, the schools want to be pretty sure that whoever they offer will not end up with a fluke PSLE results that do not qualify for express....eventually those that DSA did get decent PSLE results -

I happen to know the team that won last year was from Roysth....GEP pupils I believe a few of them from China.I am not aware that there is such a competition called Bilingual Olympiad. I'm pretty sure your dd's school participated
I have never heard of this competition before during dd1's era. Only found out when dd2 told me.lee_yl:
There wasn't any selection test in dd's school. Teacher simply announced a name list and announcement only made when very close to the competition date. Hardly any info given, don't know what format or how many question blur blur leh and needless to say zero preparation since so last minuteMy friend told me she wanted to let her P6 GEP daughter try DSA under this domain but found out that her daughter had already rejected to do a \"test\" earlier, whereby the teacher will select the best (sleepy's step 1).
By the way, it's also a recruitment drive. While they were there for SMBO, participants were separated into boys and girls. Mdm Heng gave a speech to the girl participants

For SPSO yes only 5 students selected to represent school. Again, teacher just announced a name list and blur blur no info given on format or type of questions. Teacher only told them to go read up lower Sec stuff by themselves. Like that very unprepared leh
But for MO competitions eg NMOS, Annual Mathlympics and SMOPS any student can sign up. Only RIPMWC is by selection in dd's school -

I can't seem to find the link between SMBO & SCGS. When I do a search, Rosyth's name keep popping out. :scratchhead:lee_yl:

Not all primary schools get a chance to send in representatives, to participate.
Only those schools that happen to be strong in Science subject, will do so, including some GEP centre.
normally, these 5 students selected, are Outstanding in standard or level cohort, plus demo a very strong passion towards Science. They are hand-picked & selected by their respective Science Tr, in class.
P5/P6 parents can find out from their own school's Science HOD : whether their school ever participated, or not. -

I know that at least for one of the gep centres, most participants are from China. For other competition that limits participants, geppers are usually selected. But, I qualify that this is only based on my observation from one gep centre.I am not aware that there is such a competition called Bilingual Olympiad. I am not sure dd's school even participated!!
