Agreed with Floppy. I am going to Japan in Dec. Booked air tickets first, followed by hotel rooms. Then I planned the itinerary. Still work in progress…

1. Is it safe to book flights first before planning itinerary?

I would book flights first too. However, it is useful to have a rough idea where you want to go (as in the main cities to visit) as it may influence your flight bookings. For example, if you are only staying put in Tokyo, then it is fairly straight forward as you can book flights that fly in/out from Haneda or Narita.

If you intend to visit Tokyo and Osaka/Kyoto area, then, 2 possibilities:

1) Fly in and out from Tokyo. Fly into Tokyo, take shinkasen to Osaka/Kyoto and then take return shinkasen to Tokyo before departing from the city.

2) Fly into Tokyo and then fly out from Osaka (or vice versa). Personally this would be my preferred route as I save on 3 hours travelling time on the shinkasen (plus another 30-45mins to be at platform early) to return to Tokyo. I can use the time sightseeing.

Haneda is nearer to city. I think less than 1 hour commute time from airport to city centre. Which airport also depends on whether you are taking full service or budget airlines.

I would prefer to arrive early - your holiday starts immediately upon landing :rahrah: . If arrive after 9pm, it's late in the evening and Japan is going to :snooze: :snooze: Also, when you arrive 9pm, effectively you are paying for a full day hotel room rate, which you can only enjoy after 9pm. However, if the hotel (or Airbnb) allows you to pay half day rate, then, I guess you might want to consider whether it is still worth arriving Japan at night.

For your qn 2, Haneda is nearer the city centre and Tokyo station. Useful if you are taking Shinkansen which departs from Tokyo station.

For qn 3, personally prefer flights that arrive early. Easier to find the way.

Haneda is a good choice for an airport. Be aware that some subway stations in Tokyo are older than the others and might not have gone through renovations. There are escalators, but elevators might be hard to find. So if you have heavy and large luggage, you will have to figure out how to use the escalators safely.

Thinking of a year end trip. Need some advice on flight prices. Is 3.4k to 3.7k okay for 2A2C by ANA to Tokyo for a flight that arrives in afternoon? And leaves at late morning/ afternoon ? Did a red eye flight before and my kids cannot take it.


Or I should wait for promotion? Will be there any soon?
