Aiyo, Janet. You are making me losing heart. How hv you been dealing with all these?
jedamum, I can understand and close two eyes for a P1 and P2 (early in the year), but he was doing so much better by late P2. I was naive to think that he was cured
Anyway, I told him last night these:
1) dun come ask to play PC games unless you show me sch worksheets with no such mistake. U dun do your work properly, I will make sure there is no fun in your life (Very harsh hor?)
2) For your coming SA1, if I see such mistake, then it is either the cane or assessment book. Which do you choose? Of course he chose assessment book. Then comes my headache, what type of assessment to buy that can cure such careless mistake? Dun have right? Even drilling does not promise these mistakes would not occur becos it is highly dependent on the child to do his work properly. Hiaz.
Before he slept last night, I again told him he must learn to take pride in his work, that I do not need him to be promoted to CH or such. He said he would try to do better. -
Jennifer,
That’s why I am stressed out…this 1 month leading up to the ‘SA1 marathon’ is making me very tired and causing shoulder aches these few days. I am using the soft approach on him now.
Hubby knows & understands my stress more (esp now) bcos he is the one teaching Math. I reminded my son to circle all the verbs in OE questions, read the passage at least 2x, check as in RE-DO the entire paper.
I told him if he wants to enjoy the few days NOT worrying over SA1 results, then he has to put in effort NOW. If not, JUNE hols will be spent on assessment books and being caned. -

This is siong. At least I am offerring cane or assessment books. Yours both! Then again, your boy is already P4. Hm, maybe by next year if my boy is still like this, I would use the same approach as you. How to keep our sanity?
Then again, I must count my blessings too, only one child to worry about. The other mother has 3 boys, each giving her a different set of prob. I really salute her. -
My dd was pretty concerned about her time-management for her compo today. (Maybe cos I had been kicking up big fuss for the last two weeks.) I told her to just try her best, even if she couldn't finish writing, it's ok, cos we know she had tried. And we'll love her just the same. I taught her 'self-talk' to assure herself that she could do it and told her she is her greatest enemy and only she can overcome her own fears. We prayed
before she left for school today to get some peace for her compo exam. We had done all that could be done to help her spice up her compo. She is in a much cheerful mood.
Can't blame her for worrying cos her teacher's ideal compositions that she wrote for them were three pages long each, which is equivalent to p4 standard (400+ words). It's not that it's not unattainable for her class, it's just that they need more time to write like that. Not possible to complete in 50 mins yet for a P2 as detailed planning is required. I told her 200+ words will do for today. -

:!: The teacher's expectation for a 50 mins assignment is so unrealistic for a P2.
What Mr Tan did with my elder boy's class last year was to make the pupils submit a compo plan (think my boy called it a mind flow or sth) every week. He would then review and put in comments next to the pupil's work. I think this helps the pupils to cover more compo topics without actually needing to spend hours to write a long compo and also think on their feet quicker in an exam setting.
My younger boy's EL compo pic was a playground outing for 2 children and a mother (he claimed). He remembered a compo we did last year which was quite well done and used the same reasoning to apply onto today's compo. Hopefully there are minimal spelling errors and lots of proper sentences

Well...the teacher did mention it's the IDEAL, hers, I guess.

I tried that out with my dd sometime back for a few compos she practised at home. It helps to organise her thoughts. However, it could be rather time-consuming. With unrealistic length required by her teacher, she needed to think fast on the spot. I ended up giving her templates of common scenarios with Beginnings, Body with creative phrases related to that scenorio and its appropriate Endings. So what she did was to MAP the correct template to the compo question. She had memorised quite a number of beginnings and endings too. These templates also sort of summarise all the topics that she had practised. I just hope one of the scenarios came out today. However, I did tell her to apply the phrases flexibly from all the scenarios if the compo question is not any one of the scenarios. Hopefully, she can think out of the box.

[/quote]Good for him! My dd's Chi oral also came out on something she had practised at home too so was able to speak like \"the flowing water\"! Haha.

The memory capacity of a young child is so amazing. -
jennifer,
phew, for a minute there i thought you were equally cool with your #2… as in no coaching/assessment books. was beginning to feel really bad about making my ds do "so much work".
e3,
wow, your dd is so obliging. if i were to dish out the same memory work to my ds, it’ll probably be met with scowls and complaints.
pench,
that explains the skew. was wondering why the boys were so under represented. my little one (all of p1) is always telling me he doesn’t like to write:( -
Son’s EL compo exam has 2 choices - pic or situation…I told him to stick to pic compo because he just learnt situation compo recently. Last night, I told him to read up creative phrases, idioms and power words.
We reminded him to look out for correct tenses, not to write too far-fetched stories and check spelling.
Jennifer,
Have to threaten him with the cane and assessment books. I have used the cane on him b4, so it’s not NATO (no-action-talk-only). Can’t possibly be screaming like a mad woman. This way, son knows I mean it when I mention CANE.
Next year I have son in P5 and daughter in P1…definitely have to use the cane. -

Oh, she is not. Haha.e3,

I can't force her to do things if she is not willing but she does have tenacity.
She managed to write almost two full pages on the foolscap today with 10mins to spare and check. Question: Pic 1: 2 boys at a park, decided to make catapults, Pic 2: use catapults to shoot at birds, shot the beehive instead, Pic 3: swarm of bees flew after them, Pic 4: they were at the clinic. Seems tough. Thankfully, she read a similiar compo and could write a solution to escape from the bees:, ie. jumping into a nearest pond at the park. Very cliche-ish but well...it is a solution.
