Good point, if they are the majority, why is the move taken to benefit the minority? I daresay my child belongs to the minority category because her English is even more powerful than mine at the same age. I am certain my child will stand to benefit from this change if it happens, but my learning journey tells me that this is a big mistake, a gravely major mistake.

Aiyo, I never say they are the majority hor. Yes, I did say they are not a minority (as in a small group of people), but I don't dare to assume that they are the majority.

I'm actually quite optimistic about the change. Like what vlim says, those who are strong in MT will still have an edge even tho the weightage is lower. The move, in my opinion, only artificially removes the mental obstacle of excelling Chinese the way they need to at the other subjects. Like what you people say, the other subjects are of a very high standard. And the marking standard remains very high for these other subjects I thought. If you don't read English storybooks, don't speak English, don't write or don't do Maths practices etc I doubt you'll be able to attain distinctions for these subjects at PSLE or AO level, unlike Chinese.

I hope the change will be in time to benefit my child. 🙂 🙏

But there again I also don’t see why there is a need to lower the weightage of any of the subject (not only to mt). If moe would want to make such ‘big’ change…why not they just allocated a few top school to take in students who are excel in particular subjects while a few other top school excel in other subject … then I think, it would be fair and square…that is my opinion…

agree. more sensible. top schools have their own autonomy to select students they want…

            Way2GO:

Yesterday's ST reported that the Chinese Clans
are mobilizing to petition the gahmen.
            MT is not just Mandarin,
            what about Malay and Tamil?
These groups don't care or is it a case of
            que sera sera?
            http://www.zaobao.com/sp/sp100505_017.shtml
Way2GO, The Malay commmunity has also expressed their concerns. Some told their MPs that the reduction in MT weightage is really to their kids' disdvantage because generally, they do not have difficulties learning Malay and score well in Malay.

Just my personal guess, the implementation of IP in the so called top secondary schools and JCs could have resulted in MOE wanting to reducing MT weightage. As Mr Ng himself said, "For years, parents have complained their children who excelled in all other subjects except mother tongue have lost out on a place in top secondary schools."

IP has made it even more impt for a student to perform well in PSLE so as to secure a place in a top school for 6 yrs as it seems like it’s harder to enter these IP schools based on O level results.

read the link. a good summary of what has been discussed here... just quote one more from zaobao link:

                  What does AFAIK means?

                  As Far As I Know.

My point is, when the powers to be says that he will correct it,
no amount of petition will do anything for anyone.

he does not correct it. there is nothing wrong that needs correction

I think the whole idea is as more and more people from other
countries flood Singapore, MT must be switched to 2nd Lang.
It is hard to be consistent across board for all 2nd languages.
Neither can they make new citizens to adapt to the limited
                        languages offered as MT.
