[PSLE MT] PSLE less weightage in Chinese / Mother Tongue
-
I have a hunch that the eventual outcome will be L1R2 for PSLE. Pro argument is that it’s similar to O Levels. And it’s sort of compromise for both sides.

Haha!! Hyperkiasu, I like your reply.

That's why I said that Mrs Sng must thank her lucky stars that her letter was publised in the ST forum and not here, otherwise, she can be quite sure that bullets would be flying at her from every direction!

Yes, believe this might be the solution. Been hearing some rumours about it. -

How does this work? Can you elaborate? -
MMM:
True. I've got friends or their hubby who were posted to China. They're in MNC in really senior management positions. Despite Chinese not so fantastic (some really struggled during school days), they were posted to China. Thanks to the policy of having to attain a certain proficiency in the language, they managed fine (surprisingly, knowing their standards).
We are so blessed as we are bilingual and CL being part of the cirriculm is compulsory for us. At least we can read and speak the language. Even those who struggled, I am sure they can understand. -

it is already down the the 4 basic subjects .... what else is not 'R' (relevant) ?
do u know that many doctors in government clinics and hospitals are very frustrated due to lack of MT and cannot communicate with the patients ? those docs migrated from M'sia have an edge over the NUS medic grads -
Actually, the standard of Chinese is already not very high, why lower weighting? I’ve got friends, niece and nephew whose Chinese was not up to standard (半桶水), but they can still score A and A* for Chinese in PSLE.

I guess alot of times why students are put off by Chinese is due to the high number of strokes involved in the Chinese character.
For those who do not read often, they will find it a stumbling block to ready even one passage cos if you do not know a character and there is no hanyu pinyin, you are sort of stuck.
Whereas for English, even if you do not know how to read a particular word, you can use phonics to sort of decifer the word and guess it’s meaning.
Thus, emphasis must be given to Chinese at even a younger age than English. Let the children know as many Chinese characters as possible so that they find reading Chinese stories enjoyable. -

Heard from my mum that one of my cousins who is now a doctor is trying to learn how to speak dialect from my uncle. So that she can communicate with the patients. So this is a valid concern.markfch:
