Hi,
My son is 6 years old and terrified of putting his head in the water. He’s ok to splash around as long as his face is not wet. The first and last swimming lesson he had was super traumatic. Is there any recommendation for suitable coaches and is swimming compulsory in Primary School?
TIA -

What happen in the previous swimming lesson and which area are you looking at?
MOE is a stakeholder in the new Swimsafer program. It is likely that swimming lesson will be compulsory. The water safety council is aiming to make sure that everyone has a minimum pass in the stage 1 of the Swimsafer program. Certain schools might go further than that. -
Well, at the last lesson (we’re in amk area) my son was so terrified that he clung onto me like glue. I attempted to yank him off and he pulled down the front of my swimsuit in the process…in the presence of the male coach and other male swimmers. I’m just wondering if I can leave it to the primary school to teach him swimming or whether I should get a specialised coach to help him now.

HiHi,
Any recommendation on swimming instructor? I’m staying ard lakeside and looking for one good and patient instructor for my 6 yr old boy.
Any feedback on the swimming lessons at Fairway Club?
THanks -

Hmm, is your son usually terrified of new things before trying or just of the swimming lesson?
If your son is as terrified as you mentioned, he may not be able to learn anything in a group class. Although the ratio of students to instructor in a school swimming program had been halved from 20 to 1 to 10 to 1, certain kids will need more personalised attention in the beginner stage.
I am coaching at bishan and Sengkang area. If you like, you can arrange with me to do an assessment with your son then I will be able to tell you more on the problem. -

Fairway Club should be under Hydro Aquatics swim school. I know 1 or 2 of the coaches there. They are pretty ok. -

Yeah, if you can do an assessment and give some advice, that will be great. He was scared when he saw the swimming coach. Perhaps you can pm me the details on your charges and which pool u'll be at.
Thanks. -

My 6yo girl has been with her coach, Teacher Jerry, since a year ago. He's really nice and patient and good with kids. My girl is not water phobic but she's quite easily distracted and needs lots of encouragement and motivation to get her to swim properly. Teacher Jerry I find has the perfect balance of patience and strictness.
You can check him out on his blog below.

I've also noted he had just posted in another thread - http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?p=173518
which i had replied to.
I really really like how my girl has progressed with him, and I also really like his teaching style - patient, no barking instructions, very hands-on, friendly big kor kor to the kids, really experienced in teaching - that's why I'm eager to recommend him.
Hope your DS will learn to love water soon! (actually, we overcame our girl's fear of having water splashed over her head by bringing her to Wild Wild Wet at abt 2 yrs old. She couldn't resist the fun at the slides and the water splashing down at the baby pool area is quite mild, so she learnt that it's not that scary after all, and that it's actually fun! From then on, it's really like fish to water.)

Hi
My child is going for the silver test and has been asked to get a t-shirt to be worn beneath the swimming pyjamas. Would like to know what kind of t-shirt I should get and where? Will the normal cotton-type be ok or it will absorb too much water? Is there any special type needed, like the pyjamas is those polyester type?
thanx -

Usually, it is not so particular about the T-shirt. There might be only a slight difference between the polyester type and cotton type. To me, what is more important is that the T-shirt is not too small or too big. When it is too small, it is quite difficult for the kids to take out in the water. When it is too big, it create a bigger drag and make it more tiring for the kids when they are swimming.
The last NASSA silver test is in June. By right, your child should have been practising with T shirt and pyjamas for a while already as it is not too far off to the test. -

Do you know when is the last NASSA Gold test? Is it in June? Is the registration closed already? Thanks for your advice. -

Hi snowz,bubblesnsplashes,

The last NASSA Gold is in June. I don't know if the SSC will extend it but as of now, the deadline is in June.
Registration will depend on the pool. Which pool are you looking at?
As far as I know, Clementi has closed registration quite some time ago. Bedok started registration on wed few days ago but it should be fully booked by now. I was there at around 8am when registration open at Bedok but I have to queue 1 hr to reach my turn.
Sengkang has quite limited slots left. Delta pool might still have. I think I have seen Bishan putting out the test dates so there might be some slots left over there.
So it all voice down to which pool you are looking at?
