Would there be a walk over and then no need to work?

huh? isn't it the opposite? Got voting then no need to work.

walkover means no PH for voting day so need to work.

So can HY also run as an Indian candidate in an EP election reserved for Indians? If she becomes EP, does her term also count towards having an Indian EP? ๐Ÿ˜‰

          I shall quote myself :
          Zeit:
There's been some disquiet on these 3 potential candidates not being Melayu. I had a quick glance at the 6 GRCs that have an Indian MP as minority representative.

I notice the MPs who were certified as Indians (some are Chindians but they go by father's race) are either Christians or Hindus.

The Christians are Darryl David, V. Balakrishnan and Indranee R (who are of Indian descent like the 3 presidential-hopefuls).

The Tami Hindus/agnostics are K Shan, S Iswaran and Tharman. Not sure about Iswaran as he attended St Andrews and married an angmoh.

None of the aforesaid Indian MPs are Muslims.
          https://s12.postimg.org/8biw5m0y5/2017-07-25.png\">

I have good reason to believe when they say 'belong to the Malay community', they mean one needs to be a Muslim, regardless of race, to be granted a 'Malay' certificate of eligibity to run for GE or PE. You gotta go to masjid to be part of that community.

Now the next question is will this reserved EP help solve our problems as mentioned during the Parliamentary debates?

            1. Rise of China

            2. Islamophobia / Racial Harmony / Warmer ties with our neighbours

            3. Terrorism

            My answers:
            1. Nothing can stop Chinaโ€™s rise n expanism and pouring of billions of investments into the region. Doesnโ€™t mean you put X race president up there geopolitics would change. China will not stop their expansion, be kinder to you because youโ€™re now headed by a non-Chinese or pressurise you less to agree with their stance. They already have our neighbours bought. Nothing can change our geographical location.

            2. The EP can only do this much. The hardwork and groundwork, rubbing of shoulders with our neighbours and the Arabs, teh drinking sessions are still going to be carried out by the male Muslim ministers, not the char boh figurehead.

            3. Please look at Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. Has anything changed or improved? Please also look at the fate of Qatar. Does brotherhood mean anything when $ is concerned?

The commission had proposed significant changes to the Elected Presidency, which include changes to the eligibility criteria and having a mechanism to ensure multi-racial representation.

The Bill provides more details on some of the proposed changes.

In the area of ensuring representation of all races, a Presidential Election will be reserved for a particular racial group if that race has not been represented in the Presidency for five consecutive terms. Reservation can apply to the Chinese, Malay and Indian and other minority communities in Singapore.

The Bill also states that the Government can set up committees to decide whether a person belongs to a particular race or community.[/quote]Since govt can now set up committees to decide on a candidate's race/community group, if this committee decides that she shall be an Indian, I suppose she should be able to run as an Indian candidate (for EP election reserved for Indian) as well?

But then since this round is reserved for Malay only, for her to qualify, committee must decide that she is a Malay, not an Indian, so I think her term for this round cannot count towards having an Indian EP. ๐Ÿ†’

My main impression of our current president is that he looks like \"KFC ่€ไบบ\", and other than that, I can't recall what are his significant contributions for the past few years.

How about the famous handshake with the fishmonger during walkabout?

Somehow the present KFC P doesn't seem to have any positive vibes about him.

Mdm Halimah already clarified 2 weeks ago she was certified 4 times as a Malay minority candidate since GE2001, so doubt she can revert to her dad's race for future elections reserved for Indians!

I suppose that's why the other 2 hopefuls are quite confident they can be certified as Malays too.

I suspect the govt wants a 'symbol' so she's the preferred candidate. She can join the ranks of other female Muslim politicians if she wins the PE. They are under-represented.

He didn't run to check on the Govt. He knew exactly what the role of the Prez entails unlike the other 3 Tans who didn't understand what they were running for.

There was no recession or major stimulus packages during his 'reign', so he wasn't asked to unlock any reserves and so you hardly hear from him! hhahaa...

I believe he was asked by the late LKY to run in 2011 (even George Yeo had to step aside). Dr TT isn't the sort who needs $ or covets fame or power. Dr TT quit politics twice to return to the private sector. He didn't bother with the salary cut in 2012 either. He ran because of LKY or LHL - methinks.

The pres must be a highly trusted person. In the light of the Huang Jing case, I hope the committee does the proper background & security checks on candidates and their family, esp since this is a reserved election. There're bound to be candidates from the private sectors, MNCs, NGOs, etc who might never have been subjected to Govt's security clearance before. In future, we might also see candidates who are new immigrants heading Indian or Chinese MNCs listed here.

Is there any provision that says that a person cannot be a member of more than one racial community? :scratchhead:
