I would request everyone to refrain from commenting insensitively on the issue. Pl dont trivialize it.

        Dear DSA 2017 parents,

I need to seek some clarifications from DSA 2017 parents.
May I check if one is allowed to apply more than 1 domain to the same school? For example via Sports, and via Subject domains, eg, MG Sports and MG IB or Nanyang Sports and Nanyang Bilingual?
It seems NYGH only allows you to apply one domain, can I please verify that?
I assume your DC is not going for DSA 2017. If you are asking for next year, then you have to wait till next year when the schools open for application DSA 2018. Becoz schools can change their criteria year after year. This year, some schools allow applicants to apply 2 domains, but some schools only allow to apply 1 domain.. Yes, you are right that NYGH only allow applicants to apply 1 domain. For St Nicks & Dunman High, applicants can apply both 2 domains, eg Sports & Bilingual.

Yes, if we take a look at Dunman High 2017 batch of DSA Application form,

          I) under languages :
Can DSA under both English And Chinese together, under Bilingual.

          Ii) under Technology :
Can also DSA under both Maths And Science (if both are strong), or Either Maths Or Science (if one is strong) Or Robotics

          http://dunmanhigh.moe.edu.sg/administration/dsa-domain-criteria/

Dunman High behave differently from the rest ?
The rest : usually allow one domain only.

But, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls Secondary 2017 DSA Application Form :-

Did SNGS state explicitly, can dsa by more than 1 Domain, on her Application Form ?

You have misunderstood - For Bilingual domain is considered under 1 domain, under English & Chinese languages. And yes, for SNGS, 1 applicant can DSA by more than 1 domain on her application, i,e, she can apply Sports (1 domain) & Bilingual (1 domain).

How does one define \"specific\" talent?

JMHO, it would simply mean being outstanding in one specific academic area.

If a student can DSA using English (under languages) and also Maths (under STEM) at the same time, is this still considered specific talent? Instead of one try, now the student gets 2 shots using academic subjects, might as well revert back to overall academic.

Having said that, I think being Bilingual itself is a special talent.

As for DSA for multiple domains in same school, the interpretation and implication by the schools are not standardized and I hope MOE can look into it.

Previous years, for e.g. DHS has a DSA (General) category where you just need to score 85% and above for school results. DHS also had a DSA (Academic) category where you need to score 80% and above for school results and show achievements in English, Maths, Science, Bicep or MEP.

This year, all schools have to narrow down the DSA domain and applicants must show achievements in a specific talent for that domain i.e. good school results alone is not enough.

She is in DSA sports class. My daughter is in Cedar sec 1 too. Seen her in school. They are in shock. Rumoured that she was cyber bullied. This is so sad!

Wow then this may be first case of dsa suicide. There are quite a few stories of dsa students unable to cope with academic expectations of the top schools. The schools have big responsibility when taking in dsa students. Parents should play a big role in deciding if their kid can handle the stress of non academic dsa.

This is a very sad case. She is DSA sport student. My DD1 is her senior and was giving her some 'counselling' in March, she had few friends in the class(heard only 3 of them talked to her) so was upset about it. But, she seemed okay after that and talked happily & enjoyed training, they wanted to talk to her last Fri again after the school but she committed suicide the day before, the whole team was very sad any my DD1 thought things could be different if they could talk to her earlier, DD1 cried few times. We told her that there was no sign at all and even her own parents didnt notice it, moreover she is not a trained counsellor, heard she was still doing baking together with friends before the incident.

P/S. My DD1 is in IP and not via DSA so she might not know if it is really hard for DSA students to cope with the studies.

                    https://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/12-yo-filipino-girl-who-committed-suicide-complained-being-outcasted-doing-badly-math

                    Sounds authentic....

While she may or may not be under DSA, this case highlights the serious stress faced by school kids if they are unable to catch up with their schoolmates. It is common for students in top schools to feel ostracized if they fall behind academically. If they are under DSA, they may already be weaker in certain subjects, and this will further add to their stress as a lot of time is also spent on CCA. Sometimes, being rejected for DSA may be a blessing in disguise.

                    Very, very tragic

She is Filippino (PR studying in Sg), maybe due to cultural difference ?

Wondering ... if she was bullied by her peers, in school ?[/quote]This is a very sad case. She is DSA sport student. Yup, now all schools need the applicants to show special achievements for specific talent.

But why some schools are so special that one can apply DSA using English and at the same time, also using Maths whereas most other schools only allow applicants to apply to DSA using academic subjects once only?

Based on this logic of multiple applications based on academic subjects, why not allow students to apply to DSA 4 times for all academic subjects? Will this still be called \"specific\"?

Charchel, your DD1 sounds like a very caring and compassionate girl. I am sorry for the grief she must be going through. I hope you continue to give her lots of love and reassurance so that she knows she has nothing to feel regretful for. In fact, she has already gone out of her way to bring comfort and hope to a schoolmate in need. That in itself speaks volumes about her character.
