DSA 2017

Harrychew:
The top schools received large numbers of applicants every year, ome received more than a thousand, according to the principals. Typically around 10 - 15% of applicants get CO for these top schools.
I heard last year was >900 applicants and NJC was one of the schools that gave standardized screening tests for all applicants.ying2:

Don't think this year will be as tough as 2014.
That year 700 over applicants sat for test, shortlisted about 100 over, should be less than 150, for interview and CO 50 students.
This year DSA process and criteria have been changed.
I think it is more work and headache for them to choose. The school wanted to make sure the DSA students can success in their IP program, since there is commitment for DSA student that not allow to change school.
I would think that if called up for interview, the chance is most likely in the range of 40 - 60% success rate, since no school in their right mind will plan to burden everyone with so many interviews.
Academic ability is a major criteria, as such we can safely say that first filter is P5 and P6 results.
I have also heard that for this year, GEPs are no longer getting a free ride on DSA as their DSA rejection rate is relatively higher than past years.
Maybe MOE belatedly discovered that giving past GEP free ride has cultivated complacency?[/quote]For Geppers, if they apply under academic / leadership / other domain : they Can still choose their strongest subject, to apply via DSA, and to enter Top schools.
This year : the curb, control & reduction in the number of DSA places allocated to Secondary schools, has greatly reduced the number of DSA vacancies offered, to both (Geppers + Mainstream) P6 students, compared to past years.
The seats are then released back to cabdidates, who will enter via PSLE T-score, by being able to meet the respective official Secondary schools' Cut-off-point.
T-score is still the fairest barometer used for measure, for Sec 1 admission entry, based on 4 subjects. -

Most geppers DSA for RI or RGS. Outcome not out. How to say rejection higher? Not fair to say geppers free rider. They are taught less of the PSLE stuff unlike mainstream and do more projects? Most still score above 250. Most awards won by geppers. Please be sensitive in your comments.
I totally agree. Why said its free ride for them. They take the same test, go to the same interview like other MS kids. The school choose the candidates not the other way round. They are just 12yr old kids like any of the MS kids. They work equally hard as well. Please spare a thought for them when you pass bias comments. Thanks. -

I totally agree too. My DD works very hard for everything that she does. Be it her projects, school work or CCAs. She's definitely not getting a free ride.Yngmng:

Thank you Yngmng to speak this out. I do not understand what's the meaning of \"free ride\" too. From the very beginning, geppers are selected from MS and all kids have their fair chance to achieve this. Geppers have more non psle related subjects to learn/projects to do even in P6. Though they have lesser time to concentrate in psle many can still achieve high.
As I have already mentioned in my previous post, all Dsa schools are selecting talented students they want. It dose not matter if u r Gep or ms, in the end all is about the talent and ability. What our DC achieved in the past gain their entrance test, what they achieved in the HDP/interview gain their CO or WL. -

I have both gep and mainstream children. I do not think the gep child is taught less of PSLE stuff. In fact I think her gep curriculum contributed to her stellar psle results. Please don't flame me, just my own experience. -
There is no free ride for anyone in sgpore education system.
