a)Hi,
My daughter is considering going to TKGS next year. I am doing some research.
1. How many Arts and Sci classes will there be after streaming (assuming it is done in Sec 3 like my time)?
My daughter is strong in Maths/Sci but weak with languages. We will not want a situation where she just makes it into TKGS, and come streaming, be forced into the Arts stream bec the better students chope the Science classes.
2. TKGS offers Economics at O levels, which is rare.
Is this the same type of Economics offered in JC (as opposed to Home Economics)?
Is it available in Arts or Sci streams or both?
What are the chances of getting to study it?
Appreciate any inputs. Thanks
As of 2017 Sec 4 level :
heard that TKGS only offer One Triple Sciences (i.e. study GCE O level Pure Physics, Chemistry, Biology) class.
(Sec 4 parents, if above is wrong, pls do correct me. Thank you).
b)
TKGS offer Econs (F & N : Food and Nutrition)
May read source of info (Moe) :-
https://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/2005/pr20050922a.htm
One may read more about Econs, here :
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanjong_Katong_Girls%27_School
c)
TKGS also offer Drama, along with other Girls Secondary Schools, like St Margaret, CHIJ Katong, CHIJ Toa Payoh, etc.
Drama is also interesting, to those who aspire to be actress, potential movie director, script-writer for plays, etc.
TKGS offer more variety, to girls. Jolly Good ! -
To take MEP (Music), minimum must pass Grade 3 :-

How is MEP, like ?
Is it difficult ? -

At 2017 Sec 4 level : heard that TKGS only open One Triple Science class.yeoleonglydia:
Now all secondary schools go by subject combination. Triple Sci usually will take 3 Sciences but you have to meet certain criteria to take this combi.
There are many students who have done well in sec 2 but they rather take 2 Pure Sci, 2 Maths, 2 Humanities and 2 Languages as this route give them wider choices in a long run.
So far, it seems like there is only one class doing Combine Sci but these students still have to take 2 Maths.
In general, tkgs standard is quite high and competitive. The sch pace can be quite fast and their exams date is usually quite early compared to other schs.
Is best to look at the cut off median to determine if the kid is suitable for the sch as median is the cut off points where most students get. For all these years, most pupils who entered to tkgs are of 238 and above t score.
Hope this help.
Is this true ?
4 - 5 Express, 2- 3 NA, 1 NT, hence they will have one triple Sci class too. It also depends on how big the cohort is for that year, the number of classes they can open and the popularity of that subject combi and resources available. Also, you need to check the humanities subjects the sch offer. Some of the schs dont offer pure Geog, Hist or Lit, only offer elective. So, is good to attend the sch open house and find out the details. -

you're right ! Most O-level-track schools open only one Triple Science class.
Example
Same as TKGS - CHIJ Toa Payoh Girls at 2017 Sec 4 level and Paya Lebar Methodist Girls at 2017 Sec 4 level :-
also open only one Triple Science class.
Cedar Girls (O level track, Non-IP) : depends, on that batch.
In some years, they just open only 1 Triple Science class. While in other years, they could open MORE than one Triple Science class, if demand is over-whelming, for that batch
(not sure about St Margaret Girls Sec) -

For students taking triple Sciences, so they only take one humanities subject? -

The Sec 4 Economics offered in TKGS, is \"Food & Nutrition\" related. (F and N)
It is different from the H2 Econs subject at GCE A-level : that deal with global world economic issues, unemployment, inflation, macro economic policies, etc
When made enquiries at MOE, the Officer said no Secondary school in Singapore offer micro & macro-Economics subject, at GCE O level. When asked why, the Officer could not give any reason.
She said she had checked the record and said no macro Economics subject offered in any Secondary school at O level, in Singapore. :?
Find it strange, because they do offer Geography, History, English Literature / Chinese Literature, at O level, but not the macro-Economics.
Wonder why ? ... -

Sorry, qms

I am afraid I do not know the detailed requirements of above schools, for Triple Science.
Usually, somewhere around either beginning or end of Secondary 2 : (Principal & subject HODs) will conduct briefing for all Sec 2 (students & parents) : informing them what are the entry requirements that qualify for Triple Sciences, Double Sciences, and how many of such classes are opened in Sec 3. -
phtthp:
The Econs offered by Tkgs is not food and nutrition. Is really Econs but most probably will not cover everything you will do in the A levels.
