last time, many years ago, was there any election, before Yusof Ishak formally became President ?

Or was it another .... walkover ?
What do you mean? There were only 2 PEs in Singapore after independence. OTC and TT batches.

Yang di pertuan Negara was created to replace the last British Governor appointed by QE2 in 1959 to prepare us for self-governance. Then came SG independence, so the title of Yang di pertuan Negara was changed to President. Yusof Ishak was Yang di pertuan Negara from 59-65, then renamed President from 65-70.

No, a President will be heard, good or bad. Because the President must send condolences alongside the PM each time there's a natural disaster, terror attack, demise of another head of state; or happy messages to her people on NDP, etc.

That one not counted as \"heard\" lah. It is just like kids saying \"Gong Xi Fa Cai\", \"Merry Christmas\" or \"Selamat Hari Raya\" to relatives. 😆

This is because PM is the boss, hence editors cannot give President's speeches too big a column or too long an airtime. Notwithstanding, I did hear the President's messages as one or two liners sometimes on my car radio or read snippets of them on STonline or CNAonline.

          http://www.istana.gov.sg/the-president/former-presidents/dr-tony-tan-keng-yam/speeches/2014

If you take time to read the President's speeches, they are as insightful as some Minister's. Just that no one bothers what the President says in Singapore.

I suppose Halimah's voice will sooner or later fade into the background too, because if she becames a Feminist cult personality like Mother Theresa or Diana, Princess of Wales with over a million FB followers, PM Lee may not like it. HAHAHA...

In one particular year's NDP, a lot of participants and performers unexpectedly swarmed towards TT and tried to shake his hand, refusing to let him board his vehicle. Then the CNA camera quickly cut over to PM Lee on the grand stand to show he also had several participants and spectators wanting to shake his hand. It's liddat one lah... 当总统就不要当‘出头鸟’,‘出头鸟’第一只被打下! 好像刚刚才一只被打下。

HY continuing to stay in her Yishun ‘jumbo flat’…that’s the best joke of the day.

can you imagine her poor neighbours having to face the security officers? the corridor will have to be free of slippers, shoe boxes, potted plants lined outside, so that there will be easy access.

i find it hard to believe this whole so-called election. from a planned election for singaporeans to choose a president to appointing a president by disqualifying the 2 other candidates :whut:
we the citizens of singapore, have been deprived of a right to vote.

now the next joke, the appointed president of singapore is going to stay in her HDB flat in Yishun jumbo flat.
who calls the shots now? ah gong who paved the way or this newly appointed president?

above is a grave serious matter …

Going forward, are our future elections going to be simply walk over, denied the right as a citizen of Sg, ever to vote anymore ?

BBC's article on why Singaporeans are not happy to get the president \"many\" wanted:

                        http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41237318
...One view is that the government did not trust voters to choose their candidate this time round, despite the fact that it was Mrs Halimah, a former union leader who had broad appeal and was aided by extensive and favourable coverage in Singapore's state-friendly media.
\"Singaporeans have always known that our politicians... consider themselves superior beings,\" said writer Sudhir Thomas Vadaketh. \"Now, with this reserved presidency, we have irrefutable proof about just how stupid they think we are.\"...
There must be good reasons for our ruling politicians to think that we are stupid, I guess..
