My son is currently in P4. He passed round 1 of GEP screening last year but didn't get through the 2nd round. We subsequently discovered that he does test in the gifted range, in particular in maths & science related areas. Are there any books used by GEP that might be useful for him to expand his knowledge and stop his never-ending refrain of \"I'm bored\".

I can't help you on books as my daughter was educated while we lived overseas. However, I'm responding to the \"I'm bored\" comment - I heard that so often! What we did was to just ply her to with lots of math and logic puzzles, sudoku, word searches, encouraged wide reading, crafts etc. We let her do little \"projects\" on whatever she was interested in (just reading, drawing or whatever and telling us about it), \"kitchen table\" science experiments etc. We didn't want to use \"school\" type books as she already had her school workload. Just google - there are lots of websites.

I have written extensive list of GEP Book recommendations, on all categories of Logic/English/Math/Science.


Just search "GEP Books" on Google, my site should be the 1st result. (I don’t put my link here in case it is viewed as unauthorized advertisement)

Also search "GEP math olympiad books" on Google, my site is the 2nd result (Recommended Maths Olympiad Books for Self Learning).

Basically for Math, Math olympiad is the way to go to stretch your child’s potential. School math may be too easy for those who are already scoring 90+ or close to 100 for school math exams. It is not necessary to participate in the competitions if your child doesn’t like it, just reading the books will already be beneficial.

But will he work on the math/science books by himself, then? If he is interested, he should be motivated. My rule for my daughter when she was small (up to Pr school; she is taking A levels this year!) was that if she was bored, she was welcome to make use of all the options I made available, but I was also busy enough that I wouldn't do it with her. If she didn't make use of the options I provided, then she deserved to be bored. In general, after complaining a few times, she learned to entertain herself (and we didn't allow electronic gadgets except for 30 mins at the end of the day).

For books, try looking at summer reading book lists which many US schools prepare for various grade levels. They tend to list quite a lot of interesting books, mostly US books though. Libraries have lots of books to suit all interests and stages.
