From what I have read so far, Janet’s son is more suited to be in the poly. A level is likely to kill him with so much writing required.

To me this is a clear cut case of not going for A level route, and so I don’t really understand why in the first place the application for MI when all gunfire should be focused in getting into a course of interest in ANY poly.

Youth years are limited. Should enjoy this crucial part of life while studying and not struggling through the 3 years when there’s a lower chance of bearing meaningful fruit after that.

Many key self esteem issues are involved for the child’s emotional development during these years if such have not been developed positively in the earlier years. The child should complete this part of the development as a more confident person and not in a self-doubting and defeated mode (if a child can’t complete this part of emotional development by age 18 (almost reaching the last chance of developing healthy EQ), then this negative trait is likely to follow him for the rest of his life. So do not take this part of emotional development lightly and only be clouded with the far fetched ‘uni’ picture).

          Good Luck, Janet!

            thanks hercules.

it was indeed a BIG mistake to put MI for the first 2 choices...main reason was because hubby felt that son would have more courses to choose if he had taken A levels...but we didn't realize how tough GP & MT will be. so we had neglected his feelings and his interest...which explained the mad rush yesterday to appeal. though this thing is not on a first-come-first-serve basis, it was really a desperate rush to make amendments. well, he had made his choices, now is to pray hard for the best.

Hi! I really need advice on YJC vs MI.

I am currently a school drop out because I am not used to the poly system and studying something that I am not really that interested in. I am planning to enroll to either YJC/MI next year through the JAE system. I am afraid 2 years is too short for me so I am thinking of going MI. I would call myself a slow but independent learner so which would you recommend? I am also scared of mixing with the wrong people seeing i get influenced rather easily… My combi will most likely be PCME. with Econs being H1. I am also

              2016 O level grades
              English - C6
              Chinese - A1
              Emath - A1
              Comb Humans - B3
              Amath - A2
              Comb Sci (Chem/Phy) - A1

No CCA points. Took 6 subjs because I dropped from pure chem/phy.

My daughter was from MI, graduated last year. I can't comment on your subjects as she was in Arts stream (but didn't take Econs). She was also eligible for JC but we advised her to choose MI. We appreciated the extra year that MI provides as we knew that she would not have handled the faster pace and pressure of JC well. MI teachers are very supportive of the students, and (I think) more strict than JC teachers. A lot also does depend on the student's motivation, discipline and willingness to also seek additional help if needed. My daughter is not very easily influenced, so she didn't have issues with that. If you are, you will need to choose your friends carefully and be disciplined in what you do. I was told that about 30% of MI students get into local universities, which I believe is comparable to some of the JCs like YJC. My daughter has just started at NTU this year, and we are quite sure she would not have done as well for her A levels if she had tried to do it in 2 yrs in JC.

Some students will give JC a try after JAE if they qualify, and then appeal to switch to MI after a few weeks if they find the pace in JC too fast. You could try that too? But you should check whether it is easy to switch or whether the rules have changed.

Why don't you drop in to both schools to get a feel of the culture & environment before you decide? It would give you a chance to see for yourself the student cohort. This will certainly help in your decision, among other factors.

Based on your grades, you may wish to consider aiming for YJC first.

However, remember that as in all things, no matter where you go & what you do, HARD WORK & DISCIPLINE will carry you through this journey called LIFE!
                  All the best!

Perhaps, best to call up both Yishun JC and MI : find out whether any rules had been changed, to Allow poly grads (un-completed) to come in to study at JC / MI.

If both or either one allow, without blockage, then proceed to apply.

If not allowed, try to complete your Poly Diploma, or see if any chance to transfer to another Diploma that interests u, either within the same Poly, or from another Poly
