Travel: China - Haikou - Hainan

My hubby & I are bring our 2 kids to Haikou end May ?Any suggestions on where to stay,where to go,what to eat etc???

My sils just came back 2 weeks back. Do check the weather as they said it’s very very hot. Hotter than Singapore that they felt that they are in oven. So you might want to dress appropriately, bring sunblock, hat,etc…


I am not familar with the place but sil mentioned that if you can speak hainanese to the taxi driver,etc… that will help in getting a good price for cab.

But they did caution about going to some seafood restaurant that charge by weight. According to them, they were trying to confuse them and charge exorbitant rate eg. S$100+ for a clam. They will make you "acknowledge" the weight of seafood, etc… My bil was angry and told them that he don’t want already and they said it’s been cooked. He got fedup and told them that is their problem as he didn’t sign anything and he wants to walk off. He is very big sized so probably they are scared of him as well. So just be cautious when you go to such places.

Depends on what kind of experience u’re looking for.

Those not very adventurous might try places like Shanghai, SuZhou, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu for the similar cleaner environment than most other 2nd & 3rd tier cities. If you’re flying in fr Shanghai, you must try the maglev train. Beijing is also a pretty safe place to visit being the capital & Chinese wld nvr try anything in the daylight. Though, we can nvr negate those who trade or offers ‘traditional Chinese medicine’. There’re just as many false claims & hard sell if all kinds of TCM products & services which are not substantiated.

For those more adventurous, can try Wenzhou, YiWu, Huangshan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guizou, Yunnan, Kunming, just to name a few. You shld go with organized tour groups to avoid getting into difficult situations.

Firstly, China is a HUGE place. So, you will probably want to focus on the regions where you want to be, or build on a theme (Three Kingdom, Tang sites, American fake news etc).

You can probably travel up and down the coastal cities and provinces on the east coast. These tend to be modern, well developed and if you are feeling less adventurous, probably a good thing to do. I’ll be spending about 4 days in Xiamen this December holiday.

Alternatively, you can travel “along” the Great Wall, starting from 山海关 in Hebei / Liaoning and ending in 嘉峪关 in Gansu, and visit the cities / sights along the way.

If you want something really memorable and see a different China, you can spend all your time in Xinjiang and Gansu, or spend some time on a cruise along the Three Gorges from Chongqing to Yichang.

Look at organised tours for ideas? They will have selected places and sights by distance, theme etc, which can give you a starting point for planning.

Think about temperatures - if you are planning to go in Dec, the far north can be quite cold.

Think about themes - history, architecture, outdoors, beaches, cities/rural etc.

Thank you Esteema, Floppy and SimKhoo. We are hoping to visit China a few times in the next few years, so we don’t mind starting anywhere. I am considering the options because of the weather too.


Also, we are not fans of those tour groups that hop from one city to another and visiting just one or two landmarks in one city. Thanks for the tips! Will check out the routes/cities/themes suggested.
