Another maths question from my DS SA2 Maths practise paper :


Belle started a savings plan by putting 2 coins in her piggy bank every day. Each coin was either a 20Cent or 50 Cent coin. Her mother also put in a $1 coin in her piggy bank every 5 days. The total value of the coins after 190 days was $192.

a) How many coins were there altogether
b) How many of the coins were 50cent ?

My DS can find question a which is 418 coins. He stuck at Question b .

This question requires a "guess and check" method.


Since you have already calculated (a) which is a total of 418 coins.
You are also able to calcuate how much the mother has contributed which is 190/5 = 38 times which is 38 x 1 = $38
Hence Belle contributed $192 - $38 = $154 which is also 190x2 = 380 coins

Now with $154 and 380 coins…you can proceed from here.

Assuming all are 20cents coins ----- 380 * 0.2 = 76
actual - assumption ---- 154 - 76 = 78
difference between 20cents and 50 cents — 0.5-0.2 = 0.3
divide ---- 78 / 0.3 = 260

So there are 260 50cents coins

Generally it is better for the forum to consolidate all the schoolwork questions in the ASKQ section. But that section not too friendly in searching for particular question.

Another question i found for my DS practise . kind of guess and check method. Electricity bill of $110 was paid with $10,$5 and $2 notes. If 28 notes were used, how many notes of each kind of were used ?

For 3 variables, you can’t use the assumption method which I have shown above. So need to do the guess-and-check method using tables. (I would think so…)


Knowing that a total of $110 is required, hence for each $5 and $2 notes…the total must be in 10s.

Hence there are a total of 6 $10 notes, 2 $5 notes and 20 $2 notes.

thank you. can there be multiple answers for this type of questions. is it this type of problem also common in exams. pl. share your view. otherwise p5 s hv to think and do guess and check method

possible to have multiple answers…I suppose so.


But this kind of question is pretty "easy" and should be a P3/P4 types of question. P5 should be somewhat more complicated.
