How to teach pre-school maths at home

hi buds, as chief has mentioned, yr contributions r great n lots of parents n their children can really benefit from the sharing u have so kindly and graciously given, but only if they sit down, prepare n give themselves and their children a chance to indulge in the activities u have suggested or at least try to incorporate some tips on an informal basis.


wat i find useful is to apply a variety of activities, games to teach the same thing. eg. if i had only used flashcards alone to teach reading, i dun think it could have achieved the same results as including early reader series, word games, fridge magnets, reading for pleasure etc. therefore, whatever (math games, affordable supplements) u suggest would come in handy as well. i believe u speak from experience of teaching your own children

I was on the plane today talking to a nice gentleman from Papua New Guinea who was in some education ministry's board. He was lamenting how it was so difficult to get his countries' parents to get involved with their children's education. Everyone was simply relying on the schools to do their job in teaching their children.

We have the exact reverse of that situation in Singapore. We are in fact so involved with our children's education that we overdo it sometimes. We spend tons on money on \"enriching\" our pre-school kids without understanding whether these services are really effective or if we are wasting our time. Sometimes, even after months using the services, we don't even know what these services do.....

Sooo... the above conversation alone qualifies us as a nation with
extreme kiasu-ism being practised widely amongst us parents. If
in moderation, it will be a good thing. ie. To prepare. But if done in
extreme... thats where the syllabus will keep changing to keep up
with our kids who will be too advanced prior to attending primary school.

The truth of the matter is, the best education our pre-schoolers can get is from ourselves. We might as well be pouring money down the drain if we don't follow up with what our children learn in the enrichment services. And once we have learnt them, we can put them to good use not only on our own children, but also for others who are not so fortunate to have learnt the skills themselves.!

Yes, very true Chief. I've met parents who come for classes for the sake
of coming... like dumping their kids on me to kill time.

One parent i encountered, from start of the lesson on his phone and
totally ignoring some of the younger sibllings who were asking him
question after question, and munching tit-bits. After 3 hrs lesson,
(Phonics/Maths/Reading & Compre) he was still on the phone and the
siblings were still munching tit-bits. As i was abt to go into briefing him
on the lesson done for the day, he raised his hand up as if asking me to
hold it right there, which i did. He told the person on the phone... \"Gimme
a minute, ok...\" Turning to me, he said, \"Teacher, please don't explain
these stuff to me. I won't understand.\" \"But sir, your wife will... cos she
has been coming to me requesting for follow ups on your child's progress.
And she wants to keep in touch with what is covered every week.\" \"Yup.
But you see, she's not here today. I'm here and i may not be able to
remember what you will be telling me either if you were thinking to ask
me to pass my wife the msg, so do me a favour, such things just deal
with my wife..\" Before he left, i offered, \"If you cud gimme 5 mins, i can
write up a quick note for your wife on today's lesson so she will know
what to reinforce (mum says child is very weak and has trouble following
the lesson. Read - constant latecoming, absenteeism, short attention span)
with him at home.\" \"Its ok teacher... like i said earlier you deal with her
directly... ermmm... next week, ok?\"

Buds, your selfless contributions to our community regarding how we can teach our children ourselves will go far in bringing up the quality of parenting in Singapore. Teaching our children is not about getting degrees in early childhood before we start. It's about us subscribing to the concept of continuous learning; that there is an opportunity to teach our children to learn in everything that we do. Fun games to play with children to enforce counting skills.

This one kinda cute!

The scoreboard thingy is cute..


Can also print for children different types
of fish for children to colour (for the game).
ie. goldfish, angel fish, guppy, etc... for indirect
introduction to fishes, which parents can cover
in more detail on another day.

Or, during bath time... put plastic mini toy fishes in tub of water
(can be a fragrant soapy fun time too! - esp for those who dislike bathing)
and use mini nets or mini fishing rods to catch them. Parents can get
those foam number stick ons (will stick on wall when wet) and ask child
to fish out the number of fishes stuck on the wall, into their baby buckets.

After finishing with the shower, can reward your child with Cheesy Mini
Fish Biscuits! They have colourful ones sold at Cold Storage which my
girls like to munch on.

I have 2 kids - one 4.5yrs old and the other juz turn 20mths. Your activities tips will definitely help me to teach him maths thru \" Fun play\". I am waiting eagerly for more Tips!
