As for the changes in timetable every term, admittedly, I was disgruntled about it. However, someone who used to work in a school said that it was because staff in schools leave frequently, which results in changes in teacher's schedules and hence the students' too.

I hope this helped 🙂 CHIJ really is a great school and our teachers care a lot about both our studies and well-being; I've never been turned down by a teacher for a consultation regarding both studies and other problems (eg. stress). They also constantly remind my class to take more vitamins and have sufficient rest during the exam periods haha.
the changes in timetable every term can be irritating...the reason is because of staff movement but term 3 and term 4 this year had no changes for Sec 1.

the teachers do care for the girls' well-being. there is a counsellor who will advise the girls near exam period when they feel stressed.

Thanks, do you know in history, are the na classes prioritized for affiliated students or do non affiliated students stand a chance to enter?

Hi sorry if this has been asked before (I'm new to this forum), may I know how many express classes are the in Sec 1 intake for CHIJ TP Secondary (i.e. how many students total intake and will it likely be all taken by affiliated 1st choice?). If I am from CHIJ TP Primary and I have a PSLE score of 250 but did not put this school as 1st choice, will it mean I will have no chance of getting in based on merits (my score of 250) if I place it from 2nd-6th choice? I'm not sure if I should take a chance and would appreciate any kind advice (why can't CHIJ have IP arghhhhh!) Many thanks in advance! 😄

2017 Sec 1 have five Express classes

Since you’re from CHIJ Toa Payoh primary, suggest that you ask your Principal : what’s your chance like, of going back to IJ (TPY) Secondary, if u place another school as your first choice ?

P would have captured several years of past statistics, to inform you what’s your chance like.

Thanks, that means there are about 200 places at most. So if all the CHIJ TP Primary cohort this year scores above 200 and chooses to place CHIJ TP Secondary as 1st choice, that will mean I will not get a place if I put it as 2nd-6th choice even though my score is higher than the cut-off mark? Then again, if that was the case, the fact that there was a cut-off mark of 243 in 2016 means there were still vacancies for non-affiliated students? Confused..................

if you are from IJ TP primary and put IJ TP secondary as 1st choice, you will definitely get in.
it's not worth taking a chance to put it as option 2-6 because a girl from another school who has 243 for example will take your place instead. affiliated girls will put IJ TP secondary as first choice to enjoy priority.

Since ELLYS's daughter with a T-score of 250 is much higher than another girl with 243 (in your example), ELLYS's daughter will gain admission into IJ (Toa Payoh) first, before that 243-girl.

What ELLYS need to do is to consult IJ (TPY) Secondary Principal : what is her chance like, if she were to put another school as first choice, and IJ (TPY) as second choice ?

Principal had collected several years of past data / figures, to advise her properly whether her chance is high or low.

If P tell ELLYS that her chance is low : then just place IJ (TPY) as first choice, to enjoy affliation privilege, dont take the risk of trying another school as first choice.

I strongly encourage ELLYS to go down, talk to IJ Secondary Principal, for advice.

Thanks janet88 and phtthp for your advice. Yes I think I will go down to the school on Monday, hopefully I can get some constructive information then. This system is really not so great, why do all parents have to 'play poker' every year and guess?!?! It should be much simpler and less stressful for all, whether one did well, not so well, or mediocre 😓

Hi, IJ TP is a great school! We chose this school due to its proximity to home and I had wanted dd2 to do O lvls.

My dd2 is not an affiliate so she was a little apprehensive about making friends and fitting in. But the affiliates are such a friendly and genuine bunch! Before entering IJ sec, we heard so many negative comments from all the neighbouring schools and even from their own pri school affiliates in TP. When we got in, we realised it was all just a load of crap! I think the pri sch side in TP has alot of misunderstanding about the sec sch side lol!
Dd2 is in 1/1, her classmates hv t-scores 247 and above. They come from all the different IJ affiliates (not only TP) and other different pri sch. Her teachers are very nice and they do help the girls in adjusting to sec sch life.
As for someone’s complaints about teachers here not teaching well, this is not unique to IJ : ) My older two are in IP, they will tell you their teachers ‘do not teach at all’
So far, I am seeing a very structured and organised curriculum coming from IJ. In fact, their Maths curriculum is pretty challenging. My dd2’s English has improved alot due to this school’s strength in English and emphasis on Literature. I like the fact that they hv much opportunity for the girls to hone their public speaking skills, which is so important in the O levels and JC’s PW now.
Looking at their intake and their eventual O level results, you can see the school has done a wonderful job.

Just to add, my daughter did art this year in sec1. She will be doing home economics next year.

She does not hv any problem making appointments to consult her teachers. Her teachers are very patient even with the most basic questions like answering formats : ) All her emails and whatsapp msgs are answered promptly by her teachers on the day she asked or the next morning.
