Instead, the Ministry of Education (MOE) is exploring examination models, pegged to different levels of language proficiency, that 'give students progressive, successive achievable targets to aim for'.

I know that Mr Ng must have regretted what he said about the weighting of Chinese, after so many complains from the public. But I did not expect him to apologize. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Next time may be he has to consult Mr Lee before saying anything ๐Ÿ˜›

Oh my, what a shocking blunderโ€ฆ

But the fault lines are all too clear to see, weโ€™ve got some decades of nation building to go.

not an easy task, so they say it will take 5 to 10 yrs to do it?

They are already moving forward with a plan.
              http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/2010/03/strengthening-language-skills-.php
MOE press release on 10 March 2010 :
\"Greater attention will be given to develop the listening and speaking skills of students. MOE will equip schools with a diagnostic tool to assess the CL oracy competence of Primary 1 students at the start of the school term. The information would enable teachers to better customise their teaching to meet the different learning needs of students. \"

I heard that all P1 students will have to take this diagnostic test in 2012.

My concern is whether they will put a child who cannot speak mandarin very well in class where a lower standard of Chinese is taught. This will be very sad, because the child may be able to understand spoken Mandarin very well and read Chinese very well, even though he may not speak well. Why test a child at such a young age ? I came from a Cantonese speaking family and I do not speak Mandarin very well at 7 years old, but I still excel in the Chinese language.

this topic is quite intensely debated in several forums.
so I hope they can collect some very good suggestions discussed in our forum: e.g. make preschool MT learning compulsory, set up a special track for those MT \"disabled\".....

5-10 years to implement? Hopefully by then our kids already over the stage. Worst case is to be the "guinea pigs"โ€ฆ

but why need to be so complicated :scratchhead: ...so eventually all will get A* even those who are not so good in languages since it is pegged at different levels of language proficiency :scratchhead:
