I heard that all P1 students will have to take this diagnostic test in 2012.

My concern is whether they will put a child who cannot speak mandarin very well in class where a lower standard of Chinese is taught. This will be very sad, because the child may be able to understand spoken Mandarin very well and read Chinese very well, even though he may not speak well. Why test a child at such a young age ? I came from a Cantonese speaking family and I do not speak Mandarin very well at 7 years old, but I still excel in the Chinese language.

so I hope they can collect some very good suggestions discussed in our forum: e.g. make preschool MT learning compulsory, set up a special track for those MT \"disabled\".....

5-10 years to implement? Hopefully by then our kids already over the stage. Worst case is to be the "guinea pigs"…

PSLE score would be lower for those easier/lower levels. It is a placement exam, where our kid stands relative to others.

So are parents / kids happy with A* but score is lower than those who get A or B at standard level?

you are just jesting, i guess

think of the kids' next generation ..... no MT requirement ?

actually, for those whose kids are doing well in MT, they fear not. instead, they probably will gain more IF there is cut in weightage because they (the kids) who are truly bilingual will have more opportunities in life than those who are monolingual. OF COURSE parents / kids who are clamouring for weightage reduction would always insist no difference and their math sci eng will cover everything and nothing else is needed.

at least for me as an employer, monolingual is a handicap
