2018 PSLE Discussions & Strategies (Born in 2006)

Happy New Year Parents!
I would like to introduce a Geniebook worksheet which helps students revise common mistakes for PSLE 2018.
Geniebook helps students improve quickly by assigning questions to each student based on their learning profile. With targeted practice, students can learn efficiently and grasp unclear concepts faster.
Practise the worksheet http://go.schoolplus.com.sg/geniebook-p5-sa2-common-mistakes-worksheet-c/ -
The popular stores are only just receiving the stocks for the PSLE booklets. They are definitely not running out. The EPH and Shinglee versions are both available now. Usually the stocks only run out in June/July, closer to the exams. So don’t worry about not being able to get a copy.

Yeah…so is it true that the school will sell even cheaper than at popular store?

I think the ones that the schools get are without the answer sheets. 2/3 years back, I bought them at about $2 each. Then realised later that some were about $4. Only found out then that the cheaper ones did not come with solution. I have not seen those $2 ones in popular since then. -
Yup, don’t really have to fear running out of stock unless delay all the way till prior to prelims then get. The ‘minority subjects’ such as HCL and foundation subjects do ‘run out’ sometimes though (around 3rd quarter of the year).
It is also worth noting that some schools/sch teachers may give pupils the option to order via sch bookshop (usually for all 4 subjects) - some of them will use it as part of supp class materials, others just leave it to the students to try on their own. -
AH! Thank you so much for the info. Think I will just grab it from the popular store then.

@chenlaoshi.....may I ask how to strengthen the 理解 marks? Can give me a few tips?

Yes. Your DC sch selling at $2 (with answer keys) now whilst at Popular outside it'll be $4 each.
Once it crosses July, the balance stick will be sold at $1 to clear stock if still unsold. But careful don't get caught buying too late & end up w/o it. My DC lost twice & we bought 3 different copies, at different times & hence knew the pricing.
Some teachers will inform students they'll collate & buy fr school bookstore which will send to classroom. But beware, some teachers got so busy forgot all abt it till Aug & told kids to buy them. It happened to DC's frds fr other class & some got caught with out-of-stock situation, asking to photocopy DC's copy. DC had to purchase 2nd set bcoz teacher claimed DC lost & did not submit work, then after Prelim, found it & apologized! Tutor helped go thro thoroughly so we bought the 3rd copy & found it was only $1. -

Hi laughingcat,
If we are talking about doing well/excelling in the comprehension section:
1. Practice as much as possible
- so as to be exposed to as many types of story line/content as possible (some story lines are similar, in fact, as the kids come across more and more passages, they will notice common morals and/or underlying meaning in passage)
- so as to be exposed to as many words/phrases (just knowing syllabus tested words is definitely not enough
- as the kids' word recognition skills and range of vocab expand and their ability to interpret/analyze/infer from sentences/content (e.g. 他的视线渐渐变得模糊 = vision getting blurred = starting to tear), their common complain of \"don't understand what the story is talking about\" can be addressed. 所谓
2. Practice transformation and synthesis especially from direct to indirect speech (this is also useful for the note writing question in the graphic stimulus section)
- at least 1-2 questions will require the kids to rephrase (when we say use their own words, it's not necessarily 100% their own. they can still use key/main words/phrases from the passage)
- an example I came across yesterday: 小明对小华说:\"只要你肯不断努力,怎么可能不成功呢?”and part of the answer for a corresponding question was 小明告诉小华只要他肯努力,就(一定)能成功。
- one way is to challenge the kids to do it as and when they come across such dialogue, even if there are no relevant questions from that particular compre section which requires them to do so
- an added advantage is that when the kids are confident enough, they can even extend this skill and use it in compo writing (instead of simple \"mother asked xiao ming to stop playing and start revising for his test next week\" they will be able to express using dialogue like \"why are you still playing? have you forgotten about next week's test?\")
3. Learn a list of descriptions for moral characters/virtues
- this point can be linked back to point 1 because as they come across more passages they will realise/know what are the descriptions they do not know how to express/write in chinese
- e.g. filial piety 孝顺 considerate 为别人着想 understanding 善解人意 lazy 懒惰 no determination 没有毅力/恒心 etc.
- again, this is not only useful for last couple of questions on personal thoughts/views/comments in compre section but can also be used in compo writing too
(as you will notice, a lot of skills/techniques are applicable over various sections/components 一石多鸟
)

Thank you Esteema.:please: Okok....I will get my DC to buy it from school. :rahrah:
