Oh! Wat a relief! But to keep us on edge for so many days is downright impossible! Why does it take him so long despite so many petitions, speeches, feedback forums etc for him to realise the misunderstdg he has caused?
Perhaps, it was all to gather public feedback and the backlash was too much to stomach; hence the \"realisation\" and apology that he has caused a misunderstanding; but wateva, I'm definitely cheering for the positive outcome of this whole fiasco! Chinese language is alive and well in SG! Yeah!! :celebrate: -

Tamarind, FYI, the local university admission requirement has changed. There is no need for pass in MT. For those who fail, during the course of study, they just need to attend a MTL course conducted by the university.NUS only require students to pass MT. There is no need to get an A grade. If a student cannot even pass MT, he does not qualify for a university education.
Remember that our government wants our universities to be world class. If they take in everybody, then a degree will become worthless. -

I like these 2 paragraphs from PM Lee's speech.

Had it not been for the bilingual policy producing a whole new generation of Singaporeans who are competent in and proud of their Mother Tongues, I do not think we would have had this reaction. And the government shares the same goals as many of those who has spoken up – to maintain a strong emphasis on Mother Tongue languages, to keep our bilingualism alive and ultimately to create the best environment to give our students and our children the best headstart in life.\" -
Sigh… his wrong choice of words lead to so much precious resources being used – people’s time in arguing, writing to forum, clans’ meeting, organising & signing petition …

Next time may be he has to consult Mr Lee before saying anything

Look at point 10 of Mr Ng's speech.... it's now completely different from what he said earlier about making it easier for bright students who don't score well in MT to enter top sec. schools.
\"10. This shift to a more proficiency-based approach should not lower standards or reduce the incentive for our students to learn MTL. On the contrary, well-defined proficiency-based syllabi and exams will set clear and appropriate standards for students to aim for. The incentives to do well will also remain. Those who demonstrate higher proficiency deserve to score higher. Those who do not put in the effort should not be rewarded. So, students will still need to do well in their MTL to get into their school of choice.\" -
