      Lesson 1

      The Part whole concept.

This is the very first concept all pupils will learn since Primary 1.

      https://s18.postimg.org/io38tchdl/20180203_114449-1.jpg\">

Any number is made up of another 2 numbers.

The original number is called the Whole, while the other two are called Parts.

      1) Part 1 + Part 2 = Whole

      2) Part 1 = Whole - Part 2

In our journey, we will follow very closely to this concept.

        Lesson 2

        What is the Table Method?

Now let's look at a Table.

        https://s18.postimg.org/5xz0gbmax/20180203_114507-1-1.jpg\">

Now we shall put the information into a table.

        https://s18.postimg.org/ur8kgypvt/20180203_114507-1-2.jpg\">

        What can we do?

        1) We can add across the horizontal row.

        2) We can add down the veritcal column.

        3) We can add all the Totals to get the Grand Total

        Let's practice.

          Lesson 3 - The Parts

Now we will learn how to find the Parts.

          https://s18.postimg.org/48pyvhdux/20180208_120721-1.jpg\">

          Total - Part 1 = Part 2

          Let's look at one example.

          Now you try.

Lesson 4 - Setting up the table

Now you have known how to read from the table.

The next step is to learn how to setup a table.

The first thing you need to know is Read your problem sum line by line.

My advise is not to read the whole question at one time. You will be confused by all the information and do not know where to start.

Let's look at one example. Read line by line.

            https://s18.postimg.org/nj1ksjubt/20180208_123255-1.jpg\">

            Now you try.

              Dear Mr Khong

No offence, but what’s so special about this Table Method? Just entering given data into Excel Table only to get the sum in each row? Should be for preschoolers I think? Doesn’t address more and less than at all.

                Hi,

Thank you for reading this post.

This is the fundamental to this method.
Just like we have learnt Part-Whole modal is the fundamental of 1 + 1.

Give me some time, I will upload more techniques.

                Thank you.

                Khong Pek Mao

Lesson 5 - Unit and Number

Thank you for those who read this post.

Now we shall proceed to Unit and Number.
                  What are they?

                  https://s18.postimg.org/h3ygp5eu1/20180215_110556-1.jpg\">

A Number is what we know.
A Unit is what we do not know.

This is the same as modal drawing. You draw a bar for the unknown.

                  Let's try this exercise.

Fill in the unit and number in the following circle and square respectively.

                  https://s18.postimg.org/4ckaiq52x/20180215_110859-1.jpg\">

                  https://s18.postimg.org/jy1m2owgp/20180215_110859-2.jpg\">

Sound easy? I hope that those pupils in Primary 4 and above can understand.

Lesson 6 - Positive and Negative Number

First we need to know Positive and Negative numbers. Don't be surprised. This will be taught only in Secondary 1 course, not in Primary school.

Let's look at the number line. (Don't look at your ruler. It tells you half the story.)

                    https://s18.postimg.org/enwnb71vd/20180215_112423-1.jpg\">

Numbers on the Right side of zero are called Positive numbers.
Numbers on the Left side of zero are called Negative numbers.

                    https://s18.postimg.org/fdffnnxax/20180215_112423-2.jpg\">

I will relate this to the movie Star Wars, the Black soldiers and the White soldiers.

Those Negative numbers have - sign in front of them are Black Soldiers.

Those Postive number have + sign in front of them are White Soldiers.

Those numbers without signs are White Soldiers.

Let's try to sort the Units and Numbers out.

Lesson 7 - Grouping and Difference

In this lesson, we shall learn the operation of Units and Numbers.

When 2 White Soldiers (Positive Numbers) come together, we group (add) them.

                      https://s18.postimg.org/5g4euxi2x/20180215_114111-1.jpg\">

                      https://s18.postimg.org/5g4euxxih/20180215_114111-2.jpg\">

When 2 Black Soldiers (Negative Numbers) come together, we group (add) them.

                      https://s18.postimg.org/hhzsp6ehl/20180215_114517-1.jpg\">

                      https://s18.postimg.org/hhzsp6tx5/20180215_114517-2.jpg\">

What if the Positive Numbers come together with Negative Numbers? We shall take the difference.

Then we shall see which type number is more.

If the Positive is more, the result is Positive.
Imagine 8 White Soldiers fight with 2 Black Soldiers, who will win? The Whites.

                      https://s18.postimg.org/f1xzb296x/20180215_115229-1.jpg\">

                      https://s18.postimg.org/xu9ueo0g9/20180215_115229-2.jpg\">

If the Negative is more, the result is Negative.
Imagine 5 Black Soldiers fight with 2 White Soldiers, who will win? The Blacks.

                      https://s18.postimg.org/muon34mwp/20180215_115645-1.jpg\">

                      https://s18.postimg.org/h6icc95pl/20180215_115645-2.jpg\">

As far as possible, when we put the two Numbers, we use the terms \"grouping\" and \"difference\" instead of using plus and minus.

This will minimise your confusion later.

Interesting? Let's try the following sums.
