Hi,
I am thinking of enrolling my son in the Gymnastics enrichment class for Nursery. Any parents have experience or feedback regarding the classes? Just curious, if my son makes the cut for the gymnastics class, is there any possibility of enrolling in NYPS via this route? I do not have kind of priority qualification, i.e. Siblings, alumni etc.
For the other enrichment classes like English or Chinese Speech and Drama, are there any recommendations for any of these classes?
Thanks in advance for your advice and responses! -

My gal went for the gym class for one term but she didn’t like it. Came back telling me it’s painful so I cancelled the class. It doesn’t give you priority to go NYPS.
She tried English speech and drama because we thought she will enjoyed the class. There is generally no feedback from the enrichment classes unless you call and ask. It’s more for her to have fun.
She is taking Hanyu Pinyin and Abacus now. More for exposure

Hi mummies and daddies. I would like to seek some advice before enrolling my child into a kinder. I’m offered a place in NYK, SJK and a Montessori. Anyone can offer any advices please on NYK? Like what’s the school like in terms of academic and character building and why will you enrolled your kid into NYK instead of other kinder?

Hi there, can’t speak for Montessori, but I feel Nanyang Kindergarten sets up the child well in terms of Chinese language as they offer only Chinese curriculum for Pre-Nursery and Nursery before transitioning to bilingual (English & Chinese) in K1 and K2. I feel this is a competitive advantage. My daughter is more confident with Chinese language and I see it as a stronger start off to the rigorous education system in Singapore. As for character building, it is incorporated into the program - preschoolers are taught to share, help one another, keep toys after playing (major relief for me!), line up for their turn etc. The school also teaches 弟子规 but don’t think our kids really understand. I do read that with my daughter and explain simply to her what it means.
SJK (Saint James Kindergarten) on the other hand only offer English curriculum, but I like the school environment especially the Harding campus. There are even animals in the compound. However I also heard that one will definitely need to send the child for Chinese enrichment in order to catch up with the language.
Not much exposure to Montessori and you did not name which one. There are not many true Montessori in Singapore, so please select wisely.
Do PM me if you need more information. Happy to chat. -
A noob question - if i missed the enrolment in May and if i apply now, will NY Kindergarden even bother with my late application?

Hi. I’m assuming that NYK called up telling you that your kid is offered a slot and you didn’t go down to the school to pay the deposit and such. Chances are your child’s slot may hv been given to the next in q on their waiting list. You can call up the school to ask if there are still vacancies. Good luck and hope this helps.

Hi, anyone with kids joining Nanyang preschool in Jan 2019? My kid has a slot for the PM session but currently he takes a daily nap from 1 to 3pm, so I’m kinda worried that he might have problems adjusting to the new schedule. Furthermore, the school is quite inaccessible via public transport, so it’s gonna be quite a hassle to and fro esp during bad weather. Any of u has similar concerns?

Hi Funxu0020,
This is my honest opinion after trying my child in pm slot for 1 year. He used to go morning preschool then nap for 1-3 hours in afternoon. After going to afternoon sesssion at NYK, I really struggled with his schedule as he would often not be able to nap or nap for long before school, then if he napped after school, he would be too tired to wake up fast and so will sleep until 6pm (similar to many of his classmates). It made night sleep a nightmare for a few months where he would resist sleeping at night because the nap was too late. However, he would never wake up late in the morning, no matter how late he slept at night, and would always wake up by 7.45/8am at the latest. I knew he was always an early waker but after a year I have tried to change his schedule with no avail hence have decided to withdraw him. I think you will know if your kid is an early riser sort and decide what is best for him. I think it is better for them to learn while they are fresh in the morning, instead of half groggy in the afternoon. Also, even though kids are adaptable, the 12.30-4pm session really is right smack in the middle of any decent nap time, so if you kid is young e.g. year-end birthdate, they may really struggle.
Further thoughts on the school - the teachers give very little feedback during the term and 2/3 of his teachers barely said a word to me all year. The staff are not willing to make any exception for your child, even if you have valid concerns or issues. The principal is not available or approachable to be spoken to ever (and as they say, the school is only as good as its principal). Unfortunately, that only makes me feel like myself and my child are just numbers in a system to them and they do not care for my child's growth personally at all. The car queues to pick up your child are horrendous and when they are released after school it is somewhat like a market with parents crowding everywhere trying to grab the hands of their kids. The program is a chinese immersion program which works (my english speaking son has picked up lots of chinese phrases) but it is not outstanding otherwise. For a prestigious and popular kindergarten, my experience of it has been sadly disappointing.
