Passion for a field of study will count for admission to the National University of Singapore (NUS) from this year.

Those applying for a place at NUS will be given 1.25 bonus points for their first choice - equivalent to going from C to B or B to A in an A-level H1 subject.

This applies only to courses where entry is based purely on converting a student's grades into points, and not to courses such as medicine and law where students are assessed on their aptitude and interests through interviews.

I wonder how useful this will be because wouldn't everyone put their most favoured course as first choice? And so everyone just applies with the extra 1.25 each, and hence no real difference bec everyone's UAS has increased by 1.25? Although I guess it discourages people from trying for first choice courses which they stand very little chance in.

It may hep those who think they can't make it into their favoured course, but may be encouraged to try now. But I think it's more psychological than anything - to encourage students to think about they really want, not just what they can get into.

I suppose so, but for 90, does it make a difference? And only for courses that don't have interviews, aptitude tests etc.

Agree with jtoh. Not everyone wants to be a doctor or lawyer. Many of DS' peers score perfect UAS but they're not applying to Med & Law.

Just wondering.. Are applicants who score a B for H1 (UAS 88.75) ranked on par with those who score straight As (UAS 90), if both apply to the same course as their 1st choice ?

And yes, my dd had friends with perfect UAS applying for Engineering and Yale-NUS.

It depends on the popularity of the course? If we look at NUS indicative grade profile of 2017/18 applicants who are offered places:

Besides Law and Medicine, a few other courses, eg Aeronautical Engineering, most courses under School of Computing, require AAA/A for even the lowest 10th percentile.. I've no idea what their cut-off UAS were.. but it's possible that majority of the applicants had perfect score?
