Hi…I’m just wondering if any parents do this with their P5 and P6 children?

Do u sit down with them after major exams to calculate their T-score? And from that T-score, list out the secondary schools which they would qualify for (based on the historical COP)?

Is this strategy helpful for planning/discussion/motivation/improvement of marks over time?

I’m asking because my DS is still young. I don’t know if at that pre-teen age, he would be happy for me to have such a discussion with him. I know some primary schools have career talks for graduating students, but how about talks specific to managing PSLE stress & selection of secondary schools etc?

If your child is intent on joining a particular school, it would be useful to have a realistic gauge of the current level and which schools he/ she can enter. And it is good to know if there is a gap or a target to achieve the score required.

Some schools do have talks during DSA time & invite secondary schools to come in to talk to the students as well, so that is also helpful for selection of schools.

Hi zac's mum. Demands of psle (mastery of subject matter) do not kick in until the child attempts papers of that level. Even if say you feel the child is ready & you have him try out those papers before P6, factors like lethargy, sudden burst of Eureka etcetera could influence the eventual psle score. Short, I wouldn't worry too much in advance. That said, I do reckon by P5 end, one may pretty much predict the outcome ceteris paribas. 🤷 Jmo.

Psle stress, yes, teachers counsel the cohort regularly. When surveys find that students are being piled with excessive tuition/enrichment (>10hours a week) these parents are counselled. Principal+external vendor+ptm conduct sessions to counsel parents about NOT over stressing psle kids. At the same time of course these sessions bring up choosing a sec school based on child's interests+abilities blah blah blah. 😄 They've it covered!

*blink blink* you can talk to school teachers if you need the child's report book outside of the regular time period (post exam...), that can be arranged. Also, some general office staff could get a bit confused during a hectic paperwork period, make sure you have original copies (mark these lightly in pencil as original, or vice versa with the photocopies, so as to avoid confusion) alongside xeroxed copies when you submit for certifying true copies (an administrator in charge'll check, stamp & sign on them). If the certificate doesn't come from the school, office won't certify. Bring these to your applying secondary schools, they'll do it instead.

Application period is opening soon, you may wanna beforehand take a few passport size photos (well kempt hair, pressed uniform...), scan these plus EzLink card (pdf/jpg formats)...

Is anyone using the method of just asking out the child to read out the answers instead of writing it down? Especially for science open ended and even Chinese comprehension…

Mainly for saving time especially those who dilly dally like my kids…not ideal but hopefully better than not doing.

Gentle reminder not to post requests for tutors any how in our Forums. It is very disruptive. Please post them in the \"Looking For..\" sub forum where they belong.

With regards to PSLE stress, it is related to how self-motivated the child is. If the child is not self-motivated, parents will be stressed trying to do the driving for the child. If the child is self-motivated, parents will need to try to find ways to help the child relax and de-stress ahead of the exams. I have 2 children, one self-motivated, the other not so much. So you can imagine which one gives me more stress 🙂

Can't agree more, I have exactly the same issue.2 kids but 2 poles apart in terms of drive and motivation.

One you have to pull back and ask to chill, the other you have to keep pushing everyday.
But we still love them all the same 🙂

I find calculating T-score useful so they know where they are and how much they need to catch up. But again it also depends on the child, if your child is rather fragile and afraid, then sometimes calculating the score gets them more afraid and they panic. My oldest was like that so I just went through assessment books, good school papers and kept encouraging…
