Me Time!

That is one consideration...
Or Move?Funz:
But sometimes really need to reno due to wear and tear of most things.
Been living in my current place for almost 13yrs. Over the years we have done some minor jobs here and there but looking at the condition of most of the stuff, think in another 2-3yrs time we should do another major one. -

Some people will wait until a lot needs to be done, then they move out for a few months and get the whole lot done. My flat is about 20 yrs now, and we had the bathrooms renovated 5 yrs ago. Other than that, we've had the flat repainted 2-3 times over the years and a few things replaced (the not-so-messy things). There are things that are deteriorating, and we know that we will probably have to do something in a few years' time, especially the kitchen cabinets. I think we will do the \"one fell swoop\" renovation rather than piecemeal. Might as well move out and get all the messy stuff done at the same time.
That's what we do. So renos are usually done over the school holidays. We either move to my parent's place for that duration or to our other apartment if we can co-ordinate the lease such that the place is vacant for that period.
My kitchen is in need of a do over. Over the years, the cabinets, especially the area around the sink, is warping. I am surprised that the fridge is still chugging along after 12 yrs. -
after staying in my place for 20 years, many things have become very old...it will cost a lot to renovate.
to do a total renovation for a 30 year old flat is not worth the money. this is the reason why I think it's better to move. for one, everything is new. the ID prepared me mentally that the rooms in new flats are SMALL compared to my present place. so to maximize walking space, study cabinets are best wall mounted.
why does HDB make rooms small and living rooms big? :? people don't sleep in living rooms. -
It is an assumption that bedrooms are meant for sleeping and most of the family activities will be in the living room.

Bedrooms are only for that 1 or 2 persons. Living room is for where everyone gathers so naturally living rooms are bigger.after staying in my place for 20 years, many things have become very old...it will cost a lot to renovate.

I guess for me, whether brand new or old apartment also have to reno. I am not the kind who can move into a place as is. If talking about limited lease kind of residences then yes, a brand new place with new longer lease will make more monetary sense compared to renovating an old one. But for freehold places, some of the older ones have a lot of character and are in fact better configured and built than the new ones so it may be better to reno than to move to a new one. -

If I like the place, as I do my current flat, I would rather renovate than move. 69 years of remaining lease is still quite long! I think I will only move out when the flat gets too big for me (when the kids are have moved out), or if I want to cash in the value. Maybe another 10 yrs, which will mean the flat will be about 30 yrs actually. But we may bite the bullet and renovate sooner. -

for me, moving to a new place is to pay off for the new flat so there is no more mortgage. if we stay on for another 10 years, it will be harder to find a buyer. my present place has all the amenities...even 4 clinics TOUCHWOOD.janet88:

in the new flat, I will allocate built in storage for books so that it will be neater. having bookshelves on the floor does take up space. basically we don't have the financial means to renovate this flat. i'm cashing in on the value now. -

kids enjoy staying in their rooms....partially because there is homework to be done, so that could be another reason why they are in the bedrooms most of the time. laptop is in the room as well.
they are in the living room playing Wii during the holidays or else it's meal time.
in the new flat, I guess it will be no different because I asked the ID to make their rooms cosy...but my work area will be in the recess. my master bedroom will truly be meant for sleeping, so there will be less lights since I am a light sleeper. -

I agree with you. as long as I have not moved in, I will renovate to the feel I want.

the new place will probably be our retirement nest...studio apartments are expensive. maybe downsize to 3 room flat when kids get married.
old condos are mostly freehold and bigger than the new pigeon units. my mum has difficulties maintaining even with a part timer...dad refuses to move because he cannot stand the idea of staying in a confined place. hall is huge and rooms still could put queen size beds and have walking space. -
@lee_yl. :thankyou: for recommending Sandhyas MA book in an (eons ago) earlier post... We're done with Andrew Ers P1 MA Companion & were wondering what to do to while away some time (holistic assessment begins this term), which brought us to his P1 Challenging MA. Though dd is an unwilling MA student she found the chapters fun! We're converts! :thankyou:
