NUS / NTU medicine application 2018/2019

Hello, my daughter is in JC1 this year and she is hoping to do Medicine at either NUS or NTU after A levels in 2020. She knows the importance of a good portfolio to apply for Medicine since it is so competitive, and she is currently in Students' Council as her JC CCA, but she has failed to get into the EXCO team, hence she will be just a normal councillor. Will this make her portfolio seem less attractive and how can she further improve her portfolio?


She is interested in taking H3 Pharmaceutical Chemistry in JC2 next year, but I am worried that the syllabus may be too difficult for her since it is a H3 subject. Not just so, does all JCs offer H3 Pharmaceutical Chemistry or does only some JCs offer it?Does any of your child take H3 Pharmaceutical Chemistry, please advice.

Hi,

H3 Pharm Chem helps but the 1st cut to get to the interview stage is still the UAS. This year looks like the COP for shortlisting for interview is 88.75. So far this year from what I know haven't heard any 87.5 get into the interview stage. Portfolio helps but it only contribute a portion in the FSA. So means UAS + SJT + FSA (interview + personal statement include portfolio) form the final offer of the med school. Is good to spend time to beautify portfolio with leadership and H3 but bear in mind UAS still will be the 1st cut to get to the SJT and FSA stage.

My ds fren has a med interview with 87.5. He is a council minion : ) No EXCO. No H3.

Last yr, another of his fren oso same rp, same profile, in Medicine now
I wld say the UAS gets you that interview, but the SJT FSA blah blah gets you that offer.

As far as I kn, this yr, interviews granted for SMU Law is min 82.5 rp with a B in GP. NUS Law interview is 85 rp and that’s for a double degree in Law and another discipline.

Heard that YLL received close to 2000 applications and the school shortlisted less than half for FSA/SJT. Planned intake is around 320.

LKC shortlisted 398 applicants for MMIs. Planned intake is around 130.

LCK's interviews ended last Sun. YLL's may still be on-going.

That's an increase in intake of about 30 across the two unis. Good news for those applying this year. And those re-applying this year.

Thanks, he already done it on 2nd/3rd of Apr for YLL. As for LKC will be this Sunday. Yes, from past years, LKC released the first batch of offers as early as 23/24th of Apr. YLL was some where early May. does your child also applied this year? I think both med schools are excellent, if both offer, will likely select NUS.

My daughter is glad to know that it is alright to be just a member of council and not necessary to be in EXCO, as well as taking on a H3 subject.
However, I do worry for her as subject combination is H2 Physics, Chemistry and Math with H1 Geography. She does not take H1 Chinese as she attained A2 for her 'O' Level Higher Chinese with distinction in Oral. My concern here is that as she does not have a Biology background, would it be hard for her to cope in Med School? She works hard for what she wants and has always achieved them, but I'm worried she might encounter a setback if she makes it to Med School but ends up not being able to cope because she has zero Biology background.

Did your daughter do Bio in secondary school? The local med schools have a number of students who took Physics instead of Bio in JC and they're coping. It is tough at first because of the sheer content and assumed background.
