      hi,

anyone know what will happen, if a p6 student fail PSLE Eng composition (paper 1), and also fail Eng paper 2, but pass Maths, Science (border line) ?

Will this student be channelled into 5 Years Normal stream, Sec 1 ?

(trying to find out, for a friend's p6 child, weak in P6 Standard English)
MOE website never said must pass English. What it says is your progression to which course in secondary school - Express/N(A)/N(T) - is dependant on the T score: https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/secondary-one-posting-exercise/eligibility-letter

Found the reference for the official minimum COP to enter the various streams. It’s buried in the below info graphic by Straits Times:

      - So if the child scores 200 or above: they qualify for Express stream.

      - If the child scores 188-199: they have a choice of Express or N(A).

      - If the child scores 160-187: can only go N(A).

      - If the child scores 152-159: they have a choice of N(A) or N(T).

      - If the child scores below 152, can only go N(T).

And I believe the child can choose to repeat PSLE if there’s a U grade (some forummer mentioned before).

Believe same PSLE summation for 3 subj as those exempted fr MT or 4 subjects aggregate T-score. If PSLE is poor, likely go normal stream.

Maybe suggest try to work with child to make a pass in Eng?

Did u say Math & Sc also borderline? Is child doing MT too? Some may end up doing well in technical stream.

Updated my earlier post with the official scores required for each stream. So if all subjects hovering around the pass mark and total possible score being 300, estimated T-score of ~150 = likely to be N(T) stream.

There are 2 secondary schools which specialize in N(T) only, maybe your friend can find out more about them. https://www.schoolbag.sg/story/exploring-innovative-teaching-and-learning-approaches-at-spectra-secondary-school

Meantime of course don’t give up hope & please continue to encourage the child.

Agree with zac's mum - don't give up coz P6 not over yet. If get good guidance, the child might pull up abit more.

IMO, if parent or teacher can scrutinize where area of English weak, then systematically help ground that part of u'stand'g to score abit more. Look at the basics - does the child ustand application of grammar rudiments?

Find more Situational Writing materials, hv good coach to guide nec info required to ensure applied for Situational writing to score.

Good grammar ability are rqd for composition writing. Teach the child to expand his/her ideas, apply Who, what, when, where, why, & where; 5 senses applied to compo storyline & keep practicing writing storyline plot & time the child to write within exam time.

Practice oral using abv 5W & 1H too.

Practice the moment SA1 is over & thro'out June, starting with a little bit of strong subj to keep up confidence before focusing on weakest subj & balance time well.

Score some achievable areas here & there. Little drops of water adds up towards an ocean.

Encourage the child to keep up for next 6 months to cross over that 50, maybe 60 mark! Pray for opening of mind & an meaningful learning journey for perseverance, resilience, & desire for hard work to inch towards small & big goals. 🙏

Anyone think I miss details to help this child? Pls input.

Sounds bias, but it depends on the school he's in. If he's in a high demanding school like NY, borderline there is approx 'B' for PSLE. 4Bs for PSLE is approx 190-200.
