Compare RGS vs NYGH

I was from Hwa Chong. Three decades ago, they talked about China will rise. Yes, at that time, doing well in Chinese is not a big deal, but my friends and I were passionate about Chinese, and were energized by the potential possibility that China will rise, and so will the importance of Chinese. Three decades later, yes, China is doing much better than before, but frankly speaking, I don't see that having a very good command of Chinese added much more value to our professional lives than before. Someone who is not from a SAP school (e.g., with a poorer command of Chinese and less rich experience in Chinese culture) can do just as well if not better. Or rather, a good-enough level of Chinese is sufficient, no need to have a very good command of Chinese. Or maybe I don't mingle with the \"right\" people to see the impact. Sorry for being pessimistic, but I don't really see the clear trend.
3 decades ago, a few far sighted folks like LKY says China will rise. The rest laughed and looked down on China's country pumpkins. Many locals students were proud to do poorly in Chinese language. Both HCI and NYGH always had lower PSLE COP than RGS and RI.
Today, China flexes its economic and military muscles. Far fewer local students will laugh at failing Chinese language. HCI and NYGH PSLE COP are higher than RI and RGS.
The trend is very clear. -

Trend that I referred to is per this topic, i.e. that China's rise has influenced sec school choice amongst students.
As to whether a good command of Chinese will help people in their future careers and life ... let's put it this way, people poor in English language have experienced all forms of discrimination in Singapore and in all western countries. Having a good command of English can only get you through the door, and you still need to perform. However, a poor command of English means you are outside looking in. -
someone asked before, an FAQ question:
Both are academically driven Secondary schools.
If your girl has offers both from RGS and NYGH, which will you choose ?
However, choose NYGH safer !
because in the event if one really cannot cope with rigorous IP curriculum, perhaps with heavy Cca commitment or whatever other reasons they faced : at least NYGH still open up an \"on-demand\" O-level class, to help these girls, as much as the school can.
And, after sitting O-level :-
these girls have a choice, to either proceed to join an A-level Junior College (assuming their L1R5 score fall below maximum 20 points), or move to a Polyclinic.
Here is 2016 batch of GCE \"O-level\" class described ( one such class formed).
This class consist around 20+ girls, inside Nanyang Girls' High :-
https://www.nygh.edu.sg/news/2016-o-level-results
It is safer to have a safety-net catch, than no (zero) net at all, to help such affected girls, when they are crying for help academically.
Just as PSLE leaving certificate represent the end of a 6-year Primary school education, likewise / similarly, having (possessing) a GCE O-level certificate, by being enabled or given a last chance by NYGH to sit for the GCE O-level exam, at least it represents the proper ending of a 4-year Secondary school education received.

Another IP SAP Secondary school : Dunman High -
also have the same scenario, as Nanyang Girls' High.
That is, Dunman High (IP) also open one such O-level class, to help similarly affected students.
=================
In contrast, RGS Girls' Secondary never open any \"on-demand\" O-level class, to help RGS girls, if anyone struggle inside IP.
In the event if RGS student cannot cope, by end of Sec 4 :-
fail the year-end Sec 4 Promotional exam to move up into Year 5 (Raffles Institution), these girls will be asked to exit RGS eventually. Very risky, because there isn't any O-level class opened, to help them. -
For RGS, according to someone who attended a talk by the principal, they work closely with parents and students to provide academic support (including consultations, remedial, study block, etc). They don’t have O level class, but the number of students who got retained for the whole school is 2 or fewer. They worked to make sure that all students who progress to Y5 in RI are ready for the A level curriculum.
I’m not too sure I agree the one with safety net is a better choice. I think it really depends on the fit of the child with the school curriculum, strengths, culture, etc. No point struggling in an O level class and endure all the stress and stuff just to be “safe”. -
proton:
NYGH, should be a well sort after school based on its high enrollment demand yearly. Its T score shows how popular the school is. However, Its T score can not be use to compare directly with RGS, RI, HCi, Dumman High as NYGH still take in student based on affiliation.sembgal:
Which school provides a more holistic learning opportunity?
NYGH girls have more programmes related to Chinese culture. Like chinese dance, chinese calligraph and etc.
For chinese girls, I guess it is kind of more holistic?
NYGH is a SAP school like Dunman High, HCI has the advantages and disadvantages of being a SAP school. We know the advantages of SAP school. However, tts advantages can become its disadvantages,. For example, being a SAP school, It has the responsibility to be more Chinese focus in its program. As a result, it would have lost time or opportunities to expose the students to have more cross cultural students life. For example, a NYGH student will never have a chance to work and learn with children from various ethnic background because of its SAP school nature which creates single homogeneous environment.
RGS, RI, HCI, CAT High, Dumman High, NYGH...etc Soon, they will be in the same group kind of school when MOE take away the T score...
When you are thinking about choosing one, think about how the thing are being done or decision being made in the school by talking to the parents from the school.... -
RGS (IP) use GPA scoring system
NYGH (IP) use MSG score, to compute.
explanation, between these two type of score :-

IP curriculum wise -
is it true (heard) that Rgs curriculum is more stressful (demanding), than Nygh curriculum ?
if true, may we know which subject(s) / projects, are stressful ?
any parent with daughters, studying in both schools ? Thank you. -
At RGS you can’t use your SAP points while at NYGH you can. Also, at NYGH if your DD doesn’t meet IP criteria at the end of year 1, 2 or 3, she has a fall-back option because she’ll be laterally transferred to the O-level track. However, at RGS, only IP is available so failure to meet criteria will result in dire consequences.

correct.
Compare these two IP Girls’ schools : Nanyang Girls’ High is a much, safer IP school to go to, due to existence of an O-level track to fall back upon, during emergency crisis.
At RGS, if unable to meet promotion criteria up into Year 5 (RI), can repeat one year or else exit.
