Hi all, my gal was not doing well in her SA1. just want to check if her target for psle is 245, what should be her average score for each subject? Is there anywhere that I could do a rough calculation based on her current SA1 results?

Roughly ah since we do not know the std dev......to achieve t-score of 245, average marks is about 81.6 thereabout

to target T-score of 245, based on 4 core subjects (P6 English, Maths, Science, Mother tongue):-


on average

per subject:
need to score at least minimum 85 marks & above.

calculation (formulae)

take 85 marks x Total 4 subjects, equal 340.

Then take 340 x 0.72 (to be a bit conservative, cautious) equal T-score 244.8, approximately. Close enough to reach 245.

That means, one of the 4 subjects : need to be higher than 85 marks, in order to exceed 245.

That means:-
take your child’s Total of 4 subjects, add them all up, then multiply by 0.72, approximation.

Why do we take : multiply by 0.72 approximation ?

because we do not have the actual figures of your primary school’s 2018 P6 cohort students’ actual SA1 / SA2 performance mean, standard deviation, etc. to compute.

For P6 students taking Higher Mother tongue (HMT) :-
the HMT score itself is separated, from the main 4 core subjects.

Higher Mother Tongue, will not touch the Total of your 4 core PSLE subjects.

Quick rule of thumb calculation is total of the 4 marks multiply by 0.70 to 0.75. More accurate calculations would require the average & standard deviation of the national cohort.

Hello Sunny, it is good to set target. But as parent, we need to guide children to set a realistic target to get into a reasonable school of choice without affecting mental health.

Mental health is VERY IMPT.


Give them R&R everyday for at least an hour. They'll need sufficient sleep to perform well. Let them hv their childhood. Don't snub their childhood. Hear their spontaneous laughters! When they do their work with effort, give them lots of hugs & love. They'll return u manifolds! :rahrah: :please: :love:

Yes, you are right. She shortlisted the school and told us that she wanted to go to that school. However, she's not working hard (still playful) enough to hit or at least get closer to that school's COP for this SA1... Probably I should just let her be and let her learn the lesson if she couldn't hit the school's COP end of the day.

Sunny, why don’t you shortlist the schools with her. Those school that you know she can achieve. Give her the kind of target that she can achieve which is not too far off to boost her confidence first.


Sometime when the child has a little taste of victory, you may see a wonderful transformation.

At 11/12 years old, they are still very much like a child.
