... Drop in grades is usually due to lack of work / guidance for SG students ...
I tend to agree. -

Drop in Pri 5 is very common, especially in Chinese and English; first time /200 marks.

Hi mylulaoshi, is it common to have quite (big) difference between CL and HCL marks and usually CL will see better score than HCL? -
MrsKiasu:
poor thing, maybe they didnt know that it is quite 'normal' for a drop. Guess we know in advance so not much shock. on a lighter note, my gal told me her kaki strategise how to present the papers to parents to manage shock

Reminds me of how my dd told me her results a few years back. She started off with βmum, Cher said this was a really tough paper. Almost half did not clear. Know what? I was one of those that clear....β :slapshead: -
MrsKiasu:
Definitely. We should be glad if our child can pass Pri 5 HCLmylulaoshi:

I think one main reason why many kids donβt do well in HCL is simply because that is usually the last priority in terms of exam preparation? After all, it does not go into the computation of the total score at P5/P6 right?
I also heard of cases whereby kids do better for HCL than normal CL, because normal CL is the one that really needs to understand all the vocabulary learnt in P5/P6 very well. HCL seems to be testing more on the general standard of Chinese of the child, especially on comprehension skills (can be hit-or-miss sometimes). Not much emphasis on drilling on the vocabulary learnt. -
majority of Higher Chinese Paper 2 ... is testing on Open-ended Comprehension part (component)
The Open-ended Comprehension 2nd part, is challenging.
Higher Chinese zuowen (Paper 1), can be challenging :-
either choose \"qing jin\" zuowen or
\"wan cheng wen zhang\".
Sometimes P5 student can get caught into a fix where, don't know what to write about, or not much substance (meat) to write about, because not familiar with the theme given, in \"qing jing\" zuowen, or get stoned by the other type, after reading the starting line, don't know how to continue rest of the story-line, if choose \"wan cheng wen zhang\".
Another reason is :-
If we follow PSLE SEAB exam time-table setting, which a number of primary schools' SA1 and SA2 exam timetable also follow the same as that of SEAB, in terms of the sequence of sitting for the individual subject's paper, in order to prepare P5 students to get used to / acquainted & familiarised with the style of actual PSLE setting (testing environment) :-
Higher Chinese Paper 2 is often the last paper to sit for, after sitting for Science, one day prior.
Many of our P5 students are fully exhausted :-
because that exam week, everyday starting from Monday, got to take one or more subject Paper, including LC.
By the time reach Day 4, after Science, many students lost steam, because too many Science topics pouring in. No more strength / stamina left, to tackle or persevere on, for the final last paper, get it over and be done with, Higher Chinese paper 2. (last paper)
LC : Listening Comprehension
SEAB sequence of Main Paper 2, written Paper setting is, like this :-
Monday : English Paper 2, plus LC
Tuesday : Maths Paper 1 and 2
Wednesday : Chinese Paper 2, plus LC
Thursday : Science
Friday : Higher Chinese Paper 2
(everyday : no break in between, for you to rest. Continuous, the whole week, from Monday, all the way to Friday)
