I think some schools did away with weekly 造句，'自抄’ 笔记 exercises. It is wrong. During our time, 笔记 were all hand-copied from the blackboard by students. A lot of lower pri students cannot take it as there're a lot of things to copy - 词语搭配，句例，汉语拼音, Eng translation, etc.[/quote]All these exercises are \"effective\" but not \"efficient enough\". Yes I do see your point. But when I think about it, again I feel it is not efficient usage of time. While the child learns listening skills and transcribing/dictation skills, he does not learn how to really apply the word in full context. There are more effective ways to retain contextual understanding eg from practicing verbally and in comprehension passages.zac's mum:

Starting at P1 level, there is already so much stress being loaded by the schools (certain schools’ spelling lists are truly ridiculously tough) on the kids and parents. Some parents expect the kids to score 100% at each spelling. Why?? And some P1 kids haven’t even reached the milestone of being able to read all words yet, or get the Chinese characters’ correct spatial positioning within a square yet. I see plenty of tension between parents and young kids all revolving around this unnecessarily high requirement of “we must test spelling and tingxie every week to make sure the kids memorize these words we deem they must know, or else”. If we take a step back, maybe we can see that in the whole grand scheme of things, long weekly spelling and tingxie lists are unnecessary workload for the goal of PSLE. Building vocab takes time and should not be so forced artificially.

DD's SA1 results is back
P4 to P5
Eng : 81 drop to 69
MT: 70 drop to 66
Sci : 66 to 73.5
Maths : 72 drop to 41
Really caught me by surprise. Didn't expect her to fail Maths when she been coping well with her 1st CA1 and normal practice paper.
Sigh... don't know if she can improve for SA2. Was still thinking of go DSA next year.
However, I do not think it was such a substantial drop like from 90s to 60s or even fail. In fact for top class pupils, the dip in results is always minimal.
As their P5 SA1 results weren’t ideal, we studied hard during June hol and results recovered for P5 SA2. I hope you can do the same and see an improvement on your DC P5 SA2 results, or else if overall still hover around 60s, psle tscore can be below 200. -

my DD have been trying to ask her MT teacher about her compo marks, but the teacher says cannot say and cannot give back paper. like that, how do we know how the child fare wor.

It is easier to tackle SW, than the 3-picture given CW (Continuous writing).

If your school does not return P5 students their Composition paper, during PTC (Parents-Tr-Conference), before you even go down to meet Tr face to face, remind Tr before-hand, through phone call or email, to bring along your child's compo papers on actual PTC apointment , show you both her (SW and CW) answers scripts. No electronic gadget of capturing images allowed in schools, during PTC.
At the same time, do bring along a notepad yourself, because schools do not allow parents to take snapshot using handphone, of their own child's (SW, CW) composition answer scripts.
As Tr show you in detail your child's compo answers, during PTC :
use your notepad brought along, to record down the mistakes/ errors which Tr said.
For CW compo -
Tr will put down two score there after marking : one for C (content) and another for L (language). Each C and L is upon 20, as CW paper alone is upon 40, while SW paper is upon 15.
Total is upon 55, both papers.
Take note of both scores :-
see which is weaker and why, need to strengthen further. Scrutinize in detail carefully, all errors that your daughter had made. Ask English Tr, all those burning questions inside you, how to help her improve, in the next coming P5 SA2 (October) compo exam?
Reason why bring along a notepad :-
so as to help you record / capture in detail what the Eng composition Tr have told you.
On actual PTC day :-
as you go around meeting not just one, but 4 subject Tr face to face, after sometime pass, you won't remember what exactly Tr had told u. So, best to bring along a small notebook, to help you remember / recall, what Tr told you.
As we know, Total add-up for all English components, is upon 200, including English Oral, Listening Comprehension (upon 20) and Paper 2.
If English composition (paper 1) is weak, it will pull down the overall English subject score.
DD SW for Eng is ok, ave around 14/15. her main weakest is continuous writing. chinese compo also weakest. this 2 component is always the one that drags her marks down. I have been getting her to practice one compo for each language daily. and also read story books. but this does not seem to help.

DD school is split into different group for Maths and Chinese. top 2 classes, HOD will teach the subject. for the rest of the class, other teachers will teach. eg, their Maths class, there are 7 different classes. M1 and M2 is taught by HOD for Maths. she is in M3, and the teacher who teaches her is HOD of Info Comm. :? :? :? she keep telling me she dont understand what her Maths teacher teach. but when her tutor go thru the topic with her, she can understand. i am so confused.... :? :? -
there is one Adam Khoo motivation camp for 2018 p5 / p6 students, coming up in June.
but not sure is it effective or not, or just some marketing gimmick sales stuff ?

For Maths and Science June Holiday workshops, anyone has recommendations? Saw so many around, don’t know which one is good and effective? Any experienced parents can share?

Now just completed 5A only. Bulk of PSLE Chinese falls on Pri 5 (2=18-20 Chapters), whereas Pri 6 only 10-12 Chapters. Now faster set Pri 5Syllabus Foundation so next year no need to mull through 30 Chapters.
Some schools issue marking rubric by grades I.E: 上、中上、中、中下、下 to let parents have an idea of child’s exam performance. We retain the actual scores for internal moderation, so cannot release actual marks. Or else teachers do discuss them during Parent Teacher Meeting.
I do have some June Holiday course to brush up individual components, gotta visit my official thread at ‘Buy and Sell’. -

students with 60s in P5 have high chance of sub-200 PSLE T-score ..

If take 0.72 :-
T-score is approximately (0.72 x 65 x 4 subjects) = 187.2 (below 200)
If take 0.73 :-
T-score is roughly, (0.73 x 65 x 4) = 189.8 (also below 200)
200 and above : go Secondary 1 Express stream
188 to 199 : still can have a choice, to go either Express or Normal Academic stream
160 to 187 : streamed to Normal academic -
