can we bring hard-copy Chinese dictionary into exam hall, instead of electronic dictionary ?

Yes, can be paper but it has to be in the approved list.

Personally, I would say just do it, doesn’t matter if it is compulsory or not.
Get yr child a transparent pencil case or use a ziplock bag and save everyone (both the invigilator/student) the trouble.

(Dd’s time- her Teachers gave them transparent pencil case as children’s day gift but it was rather small, so we used the Ziplock bag instead )

Yes, but get the teacher's stamp with school logo on hardcopy dict or school sticker as approved for use device on electronic dict

Advisable, tho not compulsory

Similarly for electronic calculators, do get the teacher to put a school sticker as approved for use device.

Dd only brought the e-dict (with another spare) for exam purposes, e-dict is what she uses both at home and in school , so she is more comfortable with it.

It may work faster than printed form too.
If u r looking for a phrase like 未雨绸缪 for example, u just need to key in “wycm”, the 1st hypy of each word and the word list would appear immediately.
Of course, if yr child is more comfortable with the printed dictionary, then just go ahead and use it.

Some parents do not get the Chinese electronic dictionaries for 2 reasons :-


1. avoid kids focus too much on small screen
2. Train kids in lower primary to familiarize with Chinese strokes & they register better that way bcoz that’s how Chinese word DS are linked (木， 水， 忄， 亻， 土，etc)

That’s how I speed up my kids learning after I realised our kids foundation not as strong as PRC kids & not easy to drill in. Each compre (理解问答) or compo (作文) work, my kids will use the hardcopy to aid them with word recognition thro word search. When lower Pri, it’s time consuming but they’ve the time to be trained to set learning right. But doubt it’s practical to train fr P5 - too little time towards PSLE. Just sharing

I think the main difference between the e dict and the hard copy dict is the “display”.

Both have their pros and cons.
I like the e-dict for their portability and speed in looking up phrases, the hard copy dict for being able to see more at a glance (u would be able to read up more about a particular chinese character).
Function wise, both are similar.
In hard copy dict, u search for words using either the 部首/笔画 or hypy.
While hypy is the most common input when using the e-dict, u can also change the “输入法” to “部首” if u wish to.
U will need to count the 笔画 for the 部首， followed by the remaining 笔画 for the Chinese character u r searching for, exactly the same way that u would do so using hard copy dictionary when searching for a Chinese character that u don’t know.

As far as school exams are concerned, the child can only use the dictionary when writing 作文 and he only has 50 mins to plan and write it.
He would probably search for the words using hypy as it will be words that he knows what it means but can’t write it out.
Just pick whichever dictionary that yr child is most comfortable with and can serve its purpose best.
