In addition to what Lexy mentioned, please bear in mind that RMPS actually reduced its intake this year by one class. Hence, it is very likely that balloting will occur in P2C for those within the 1 km category even if it is not a dragon year.Im very new to this whole pri sch registration process. Still at the reading up n research stage. After going thru the posts, it seems that many parents are going for their preferred choice of sch that may require ballot with a backup sch as 2nd choice if ballot fails.
Im looking at two schs RMPS (1-2km) n Cantonment pri <1km. RMPS im pretty sure chances r quite low. Mine will be for yr 2020 not 2019 though. But looking at past stats vacancy at cantonment pri is quite certain so wondering if i shd give RMPS a try? -
Lexy:
Parents old sch too far and firstborn so no sibling sch. Co-ed is preferred so no need to stress again for my younger one, logistically more practical too.
Planning and research process start from earlier phases. I know general preference would be school that is near to your place, but please start from the parents' old school (2A1 or 2A2), or the child's sibling' school (1 or 2A2), other priority under phase 2B. then we look at phase 2C. Singapore Citizen has absolute priority over PR within each phase.sage_yeo:

I would think that you already used onemap to determine all the schools within your proximity as well.
For 1-2km RMPS - dont think it stand a chance to have a balloting for 1-2km in 2020. For 1-2km to have a better chance in 2C, the Take up rate (TUR) needs to be around 60% until 2B.
Cantonment is safe within 1km for 2C SC
Do expand/widen your scope if you haven't considered them.
Yah, checked onemap and only cantonment pri is within 1km. Rmps, chij, zhangde 1-2km. It seems the chance is low if not zero for rmps. I think my obvious choice shd be cantonment pri

Hi, I’m SC over 2km from Cantonment. I’m considering the school under phase 2C. Would I stand a chance? Based on year 2012 there was 160 TUR over 190 that was Dog year. Just wondering if more SC will choose Cantonment especially those who didn’t qualify in earlier phase at other schools.

Cantonment should be quite safe as most parents in the area would fight for Radin Mas, Alexandra and Zhangde, in that order. -

Well said. I rather look at the school environment (bright breezy and well ventilated), nurturing teachers and happy kids, social class fit are some of my criteria. PSLE scores depend much on how much tuition investment parents are willing to put in, apart from school curriculums
parents have to play a part in coaching their kids and not expect schools to do everything.maxbear:
I guess if push comes to shove in education, with extra tuition and not necessarily teachers then you get better results. And usually oversubscribed schools are one of those. Parents play a part, not giving just credit on the schools. If the kid is good already, it doesn't matter which school. If we want better students then it's up to us to guide the kids. Not just the school.
the more popular a school is, the more tuition is required.
for some popular schools, teachers would even expect students to understand what is taught.
But generally, I observe that neighbourhood schools tend to teach better because Teachers understand that not all parents afford tons of enrichment and try their best for the kids under their charge. To be fair to the Teachers in the “rich schools”, it’s also hard to balance when many kids in the class are over taught by home tutors at home. To catch their attention, the teachers got to teach a level higher and the less privileged kids unavoidable becomes lost and confidence undermine. My boy’s classmates told me that they arranged individual tuition daily to their house on weekdays and enrichment schools on weekend. At just n2, my boy is already lagging behind. -
Seem like RMPS would only applicable for those staying at 1km to ballot. Probability to get in would be maybe 23% to 32% assuming 70 to 100 are within the 1 km range.

Cantonment Pri maybe could last until Phase 2C (Supplementary) stage. The Star Principal of APS defintely would draw certain demand.
Its principal, Mrs Lim Bee Lay, had formerly helmed Maha Bodhi School, while its vice-principal, Ms Chan Yan Hoon, used to serve in the same post in CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School (Primary). -
Thanks all for the reply… have decided to go with the nearest school, Queenstown…

Just to share Queenstown Pri phase 2C has only 148 but 102 taken out…they may have high possibilty all taken up in this phase 2C…
