Photo taken this morning around 11am after I braved myself to bring him downstairs to Pee. Need to do this every few hours. Luckily this morning, the balcony is free from poo and pee 😄

Did the vet tell you Golden Boy is purebred or a mutt?

You may wish to conduct a DNA test on him to predict his weight, potential health issues, his ancestry, behavioural traits. Some GRs are prone to hip / elbow dysplasia, cancer, seizures and eye problems as they age. Also, if you don't groom regularly and leave the poor thing at your unsheltered patio, it may develop dermalogical problems. You may need to extend an MCST-approved trellis or awning to shield him from the elements.

I personally would commit to a lost dog financially and emotionally for another 6-7 years only if I'm assured of its genetic makeup. I suspect some breeders sell mutts on Gumtree, Carousell.

          https://easydna.sg/animal-dna-tests/

I think kibbles from regular supermarkets won't be nutritious enough. It's like feeding humans with Gerber stars and energy bars. Better get quality kibbles from Pet Lovers Centre or feed him some canned meat. It's a large dog, so you need to spend more money to buy its food.

With his existing joint problems (he can't go for long walks), you must be prepared to fork out some money for medical treatments/consultations in the long run. Deworming is on quarterly basis. Not sure how he is going to lose weight unless you provide him with a customised diet.

Rehoming GRs may take a while as it is not a HDB-approved dog.

I think he is almost 100% certain to be a purebred goldie. Dog DNA tests aren't that conclusive, really - probably not good enough to tell you about ancestry and predisposition to health problems. I think Lee_yl's taken him to a vet, so the vet should be able to tell if he already has hip dysplasia. Cancer etc - no one can tell. If it happens, it happens.

I do agree that supermarket kibble is usually crap quality. Go for Acana/Orijen/Primal/Addiction etc, which are quality kibbles. Acana and Orijen are probably top of the range and have a lite/fit version. Feed him less than what is on the bag, since he is already overweight. When weight goes down, then you can readjust to suit.

You can certainly train one to run on a treadmill, but it’s unnatural for them to run in place continuously as the conveyor belt movement might be scary for most. How to lose weight - easiest is to cut down food then build up again when they’ve lost enough weight, then maintain. Exercise also helps. A good long walk in the early morning or evening when it’s not so hot, or a run would be good for them.

I don't think these activities can sink into lee_yl's mind now. She needs to sort out what the family will be doing regarding keeping or not keeping GR.

She'll need a lot of peace & a clear mind now - with her DH behind closed doors. 😉

Reminds me of my Minky. She had pure white fur with tinge of golden splash on her back. Guess I named her that coz subconsciously hug her like a mink coat. Missed her lots liao. 😢 :tears:

there was a stage when my house was filled with pets…back then we had a garden. that was 35 years ago.

there was 1 small dog inside, 1 big one outside which kept birds, cats and burglars out, 2 arowanas and a few goldfishes. oh yes, before the dogs came, there were 4 rabbits which ran out of the house when the gate was left open accidentally. dad was too free (I agree with mum)…he bought a mynah as well and that bird made so much noise. weekends were spent bathing the dogs, changing the water in the tanks and washing the bird cage (since dad wanted to keep them, he would have to do the cleaning).
actually I was (still am) crazy over a Yorkshire terrier. we were close to buying a brown one but the owner changed his mind about selling because he wanted to use it to breed. since young, I’ve always been crazy over this particular pedigree. if I get one now, it will hide from the kids when they get home…and they will be distracted from their work. so no way.

We had a brief moment of having a dog at home, as I helped to look after it when my best friend went overseas for tour. The doggie was a labrador. Unlike the rest, having a doggie does not distract my DCs. The doggie accompanied them when they are studying. Lie down beside DCs the moment DCs hit the study table. The moment one leaves the study table or room to go toilet or take a drink, the doggie will follow them. When it is time to go for doggie walk (which cannot delay), DCs will quickly finished what they need to do. The brief opportunity to have a doggie gives DCs on the brief responsibilities of caring a doggie.
