Hmm...your \"many\" as in over \"90%\" of Sec 1 cohort? No lah. Don't forget more than 80% of the Sec 1 cohort enter via 264 PSLE cop & affiliations fm NYPS of PSLE 250; DSA about 20%. Thus, It is hard to tell you the percentage but there is reasonable majority proportion spread of Singaporean Chinese. Moreover, most China/Taiwanese can speak English, so there are very Bilingual.

I must admit that NYGH emphasis is on Chinese language, but you will be surprise most of girls communicate in English more among themselves regardless of Singaporean, Malaysian, China or Taiwanese.

The public’s perception of NYPS and NYGH (or maybe it is just my own perception) is that:

It is highly sought after by PRC/Taiwanese parents. Seems like almost all of them want their girls to DSA into NYGH. And similarly, the perception is that the school selects many of such profile kids. So is it true that majority of each class is of such profile?

Regardless of what they prefer to speak in school, or the standard of their English, what’s a hard fact is their mothers are able directly speak and inculcate Chinese culture to them at home, which gives them clear advantage in their level of Mandarin already, over a regular Singaporean Chinese student. Would it be hard for SCs to survive in that kind of “competition”? Eg Chinese compositions will show a clear divide who’s more proficient.

Maybe 60% or More? Even in my DD pri sch, her classmates quite many of them have PRC parents. It is hardly any surprising cos they tend to do very well in PSLE and move on to take scholarships to study in the US or UK.

60% or more of NYGH cohort is from PRC/ TW/ MY... really?
That sounds like a very high % to me.

Sorry, this is not true. NYGH has been taking in about 50% of their sec 1 cohort via DSA for many years. Last year many IP schools, based on MOE's direction, cut down their DSA intake to about 35%. I've asked NYGH GO about whether they also follow suit, but they did not want to tell. So likely for last year, NYGH DSA intake was 35-50% of their cohort. And from past statistics, about 20-25% of NYGH cohort is from NYPS (prob about 10% may not have met PSLE COP). This means only about 40-55% of NYGH sec 1 intake enter via 264 PSLE COP (HCL bonus included) last year, which also reflects its high COP due to fewer slots available for sec 1 posting (vs. other IP schools taking in 65% of their sec 1 intake via PSLE sec 1 posting, excluding those with affiliations).

Can schools not follow MOE direction? Or independent schools have more say?

Your calculations seem to imply that all the DSA intake would not meet the PSLE COP.
I think among that 35-50% DSA students that you mentioned, there'd be a not insignificant group of those students that would still meet the 264, especially those from the subject domains.

No, my calculations suggest that the % of Sec 1 cohort who enter via Psle posting is not as high as what ganjiongspider has stated (or conversely, the % of DSA is not as low as what she has stated). Nothing about the Psle scores of those enter via DSA. Certainly, as far I know, many of those who got in via DSA scored 264 and more (even > 270).

Why is that surprising? Have u noticed the makeup of SAP schools in Singapore is quite different now compared to our time?
