      Hi,

I will be registering my daughter for Primary school in 2011 and I’m thinking of Raffles Primary School. Could you please share your child’s experience studying in the school? Is it super stressful on the academic front? How’s the teachers? Does the school expect the child to know alot before P1?

      Thanks

Capabilities of the child aside, compared to my friends with kids in other schools. I think Raffles is pretty moderate.

Friends saying that their kids go home with homework almost everyday and somehow they get the impression that the kids are expected to know some of the stuff even before the teachers have taught them.

DD however hardly has homework and more importantly, she is enjoying every activity in school and looks forward to going to school everyday.

It is like any school. The child already know more than what she should know before P1 if she attended pre-school. The parents usually do a lot more to ensure their child is doing ok in school.

              Dear Parents,

Thank you for sharing, I wanted to find out more because I heard about some negative experiences. Of course I understand it very much depend on parents’ expectation and somethimes parents do add more stress to the child’s experience in school.

I’m trying to find a balance in a school that will challenge my DD’s mind but will not damage her self-esteem when she needs more help.

Haha, my girl already bugged me to buy a thick thick assesstment book for her last weekend so hopefully that is enough to keep her occupied today and the rest of the Jun hols lol..

Anyway we are not attending the meeting today coz it seems quite a waste of time leh, so decided to skip it this round, save my leave too. Probably just attend the year end one will do.

Everyone else meeting teachers today? What did the teachers say about ur dds ??

I'm not attending too as I also feel we won't get much ot of the session. Initially I thought of going there to thank the MT teacher for her great job for bringning my dd MT standard up. But I'm not sure whether we will get a chance to see her or not. I will ask my dd to give her an appreciation card later on.

I met all 3 teachers (form teacher, Maths and EL) by going to 3 separate classrooms and waited thrice. All the teachers are \"stationed\" at the classrooms according to their form class, e.g. if I want to meet my girl's Maths teacher, I have to go and meet her at 1D classroom if she's 1D's form teacher.

Overall I found the PTM to be useful, even though I do sometimes correspond with the teachers via email. It's 1 chance in which the teachers need to make time for you and really go through the girl's progress with parents. I get to know some points about my girl (e.g. she is sometimes talking during lessons) during the recent PTM.

However, really hope that their progress report will show more peer group details rather than just absolute marks in the various subjects, as absolute marks do not mean anything in isolation.....
